Topic: Anybody got any games they're looking forward to?

Posted under Off Topic

I've got Hyrule Warriors, Smash Bros (a bit less hyped after today), Bayonetta 2, Watch_Dogs, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Xenoblade Chronicles X just around the corner. I'm not sure if I'm going to get Sonic Boom yet but I most likely will at some point. I've bought every other Sonic game.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U, Mario VS Donkey Kong U, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Also Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, if only because of potential access to more moves, abilities, items, battle facilities, and training methods.

I lost interest in Sonic Lost World after having watched a let's play of it, though I'll probably get it one day despite my gripes with it, and I didn't bother even looking into Sonic Boom because it became apparent that they were changing Sonic's core mechanics again. I know it's a spinoff, but I really enjoyed the formula for Unleashed (360/PS3)/Colors/Generations(PC) for the 3D games and Rush/Rush Adventure (but not Colors DS and Generations 3DS) for the 2D games and wished they evolved those further rather than ditching them completely. I'm going to actually look up more about Sonic Boom, since I know I'm not being fair right now.

I'm not interested in Hyrule Warriors because I don't like what I've seen of how the game handles. Functionally, it seems as much a Zelda game as Other M was a Metroid game.

Outside of those, I'm out of the loop. Work and drowsiness are consuming my free time and I wasn't keeping up with too many of the new releases, anyway. Plus, I keep going back to old games and have a small backlog.

Other M is my favorite Metroid game. Super is my least favorite adter the NES Metroid. But, any way, Hyrule Warriors isn't a typical Zelda game. It's a Warriors game. Hence the name.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of AAA titles anymore. I'd rather spend 15-20 dollars on 3 games, than 60 dollars on one.

Although I never backed it, Mighty No. 9. I've actually avoided a lot regarding this game since I want it to feel fresh (despite being based on Mega Man) when I play it.

Other M is, in many ways, the antithesis of everything that made every other Metroid game a Metroid game. The only things I felt it really did well were having Samus control more closely to how she did in the 2D games and switching between 2.5D and 3D movement. Also, Super isn't even my favorite; It's near the top, but Echoes, which is very polarizing amongst fans, is my favorite.

As for Hyrule Warriors, you just pointed out my problem with it: It doesn't play like a Zelda game would, hence my lack of interest in it.

I'm not saying you have to be interested in it, that's what the real Zelda game is, but you shouldn't expect a true Zelda game from a Warriors title.

In order, my favorite Metroid games are

Other M
Fusion
Prime 3
Hunters
Super
NES

I haven't played 2 because I figured it would have the same problems for which I despise NES. I also haven't brought myself to play Prime 1 past the first boss and haven't played Prime 2 at all. I am just not interested in those games. I just loved everything about Other M (minus the pixel hunts).

Kinda lost interest since I won't be able to play them.
But I guess, Bannerlord, Killing Floor 2, Future versions of Banished and everything and anything released by Rockstar Games kinda excite me.

Wait, you have Prime 3 fairly high up on your list, so why not give the first two a chance then? If anything, they're equally good. Hell, I'd say Prime 1 is better than 3. I'd seriously recommend getting a cheap copy of Trilogy somewhere, since then you can play them with 3's controls and in 16:9.

Though with that high up and Fusion at #2, and even Hunters topping Super Metroid, I clearly see you enjoy narrative-driven games more than open-ended. And well, Prime 3 is the only one leaning into the first category. Or at least it's more linear and has spoken dialogue and stuff. The first two are old-school Metroid and have you out there on your own, with branching paths and the plot largely being told / gathered by scanning the environment and data logs you come across.

So they are pretty different beyond the core gameplay, but I'm fine with that, I feel subtlety and a somewhat oppressing feeling of isolation is what Metroid is 'supposed' to be about. It's also what's made the series quite unique.

And in that respect... uhh, Other M in first place? That's... interesting I guess. Not everyone has to think it's a travesty (I do) of course, but to see it topping a list kind of baffles me.

Eh, oh well. Different strokes.

Oh, and actually, you might like Metroid II since it has a vital difference to the first game: it's linear. To some extent. No story segments or any of that, but you can't actually get completely lost in places you aren't supposed to be doing something at that moment.

It's not a flawless game by any means, but the monochrome graphics and very eerie (if not very good, there's barely any music) soundtrack, combined with an Aliens-esque premise make it a pretty chilling experience for an old portable game. Fusion had a few worse jumpscares and Prime 2 isn't exactly gumdrops and icecream too (and then there's Prime 1's light switch moment), but I definitely think Return of Samus as a whole is the most unsettling Metroid so far.

I sometimes daydream of a Prime-style remake, a bit more realistic and gritty than those games, really bordering on survival horror including all those dark, vast caverns and freaky metroid evolutions attacking from out of nowhere. And where dying frequently is actually a threat. So I guess pretty much Alien: Isolation: SR388 Edition. Perhaps incorporate some Dead Space as well. But you know, combined with Metroid mechanics as well as Prime's tendency to lower the pace and just take some time to show a planet's ecosystem at work.

With today's technology you could really make SR388 a place that's both terrifying and fascinating. Not as varied or colorful as Tallon IV for instance, but that's the point, it's a rocky planet with seemingly no atmosphere and life largely taking place beneath its surface. That's why it creeps you out, it's something completely unlike Earth. Even Zebes isn't as barren. Well, that and the fact that it's crawling with metroids that want you dead.

I've heard that my assumptions regarding Metroid 2 were inaccurate. I've also been told that I'd enjoy Zero Mission. Really though, what my gripe is in Super is that the map is just horrible and the controls leave something to be desired. With the NES game I just hate being dropped somewhere with no objective, maps or direction. I greatly prefer Other M because of it's fluid gameplay and satisfying battle mechanics. I also appreciated the story and find no real gripes in it besides that it expects you to already know key points in the Metroid timeline.

That said, I've enjoyed all the Zelda games I've played including 2 and the NES game. I think the reason I was able to get over my "objective" gripes is because the game let's you know when you aren't supposed to be somewhere and it's easier to navigate.

Also, did you hear what the director of the Prime series had to say?

http://www.vg247.com/2013/04/23/metroid-prime-games-suck-says-blackgate-director/

All in all he has that artist mentality where he hates his own work being able to nitpick at any qualms he has with it, but he states that he believes Prime 1 is the best built of the three and Prime 3 is the most fun of the three. He stated that Prime 2 has the most divided following with those that love it and those that hate it.

I'm waiting to play Divinity: Original Sin with a friend. Supposedly, it is comparable to Ultima 7, and supposedly that's a good thing. People also seem to group it alongside Baldur's Gate 2 and friends.

Strictly speaking, I'm also looking forward to blowing my brains out from excessively playing FFXIII-2 today and kicking ass and taking names later tonight in my game of choice (when it actually populates).

I had no problems with the Other M map given it shows you doors and objectives which is all you really need. I may be more used to 3D maps thanks to Resident Evil though. I hated that the Super map didn't have any details besides special areas. No doors, no objectives, nothing. Just a big box with an "E" on it. That and there was an overabundance of "secret walls".

Commercial games? Nope.

After playing DCSS , I kind of feel like it spoiled me for non-roguelike games -- they tend to feel shallow and overly linear to me, no matter how impressive the graphics may be.
Of course, it also prompted me to realize that games are a huge timesink, and roguelikes even more so, so I don't actually play it more than a few times a year now. But ironically, I'm still tracking its ongoing development , along with Brogue

I don't know. When I was looking up D:OS, people kept mentioning Ultima 7. I got the impression that, among RPGs, Ultima 7 is regarded as singularly the best or perhaps unique for [some gameplay element], which D:OS was being favorably compared against. The term "reactive environment" kept coming up. At the same time, Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, and Icewind Dale were more generally brought into the comparisons, begging the question of whether D:OS (and Ultima 7) is an RPG Aficionado Grade game. Make of that what you will, as will I when the time comes.

It's just how things are working out. After all, I am playing his copy of FFXIII-2 on his PS3 at his place, and I don't want to further monopolize his time. As for why I don't just play D:OS solo, well I implicitly understood that we'd be playing a full co-op campaign, as we have in the past. Moreover, I don't expect to play it again after completing its campaign and other side quests to satisfaction, as has been my way (replayability has greatly diminished value for me), so I'll wait for my friend's go-ahead before using up my one "Campaign Token". ...And some other minutia. It may sound like we're waiting for me, but that's not entirely true.

Having played it for quite a bit now, I highly recommend making a new game now, playing for an hour or two to get familiar with the game system, skills, talents, etc. before you play the game with him.
This will give you the chance to learn about what kind of character you'd enjoy using, and how to play.
The tutorials are basically non-existant, and the learning curve is very, very steep.
I played for about 3 days, then had to start over because I had messed quite a bit up.

My top tips for you:
1. Don't over lap skills with your friend's character.
2. Do not use one of the premade classes, go in and customize it to your liking.
3. Focus on 2 stats for your character, more and you end up weaker.
4. One of you should be a mage, technically you get one as a character in the first city to add to your team, but he specializes in water and air magic. It's possible after leveling him a bit to put skills in the other elements, but mages are really good in this game, so multiple doesn't hurt, and covering all the elements is better. If you're both dead set on non-mage character, you can do that too, but if so make sure you spend the mage npc's skill points in the other elements, you really want as much spell variety on your team as possible.

If you're curious about my team, I have a mage(if it wasn't obvious) no real specialization, every spell skill there is, who also has my crafting skills. Focused on int for main stat, with a bit of speed as well for more AP each turn.
Second character is a rogue/warrior blend basically, has the scoundrel and men at arms skills, uses 1 handed weapons usually a dagger or a club for against undead since they're resistant to slashing, and a shield. Heavy armor, but any +movement magic gear I find I put on her to mitigate the movement penalty of the heavy armor. The Battering Ram men at arms skill helps a lot with mobility too any heavy armor characters you might want should have it, otherwise stick with light for rogue/archer, and cloth for mages.

This is already a wall'o'text and I've not even said everything there is on character creation :P
One last thing, and I'll stop, summon spells are awesome. The level 1 earth spell to summon a spider is decent, the higher level ones are amazing. I can summon a fire elemental, and an armored skeleton. Both are as good in combat as my character and their level matches the caster so they don't go obsolete, they just have very little in the way of skills, which isn't that big of a downside for an extra character in combat.

That's it, I'll leave the rest for you guys to learn on your own, hopefully you can avoid having to start over like I did.

TES VI, however, will be great because it won't be Elder Scrolls Online.

Also, Mirror's Edge 2 could do with hurrying up.
