Reason:

great maccao is to a maccao, as alpha wolves are to wolves; they're the same species, just one is bigger and meaner.

Looking it up, Great Maccao have feathers, Maccao do not. ...As far as I can tell, everything under the Maccao tag would be a Great maccao then.

I guess to most people the "short hair" of feathers is pointless, so they may as well just go together.
