+1 on both implications to the franchise, but I'm not so sure on the implications to the actual species they're based off of. Many Pokémon species are based on real world animals, but they're not allowed to be tagged with the actual creatures unless said creatures actually appear; only their orders and families. (e.g. Pikachu can be tagged with rodent, but it cannot be tagged with mouse, even though its official category is "Mouse Pokémon".) Thus, I can't see how the fictitious Pooh species would be allowed to have such implications.

Yeah, I think that makes sense. I would certainly stress what seem to be rather simple aliases for woozles and heffalumps to the winnie the pooh franchise moreso than more complicated ideas like whether they should be considered weasels or elephants.
