I'm indifferent on this new layout, I kinda like it but it does have bugs that need ironing out.

I know that iOS systems have this option on iPhones, and have changed iPads to pull the desktop website automatically. Not sure about Android though.

Of course this is still dependant of the browser you decide to use. On iOS all of them are limited to use safari rendering engine (hence why you cannot view webm on ios chrome even if chrome supports it as whole), where on android they can use whatever they want.
