well i just tested both webm and gif animations on mobile and couldn't see anything wrong, so you'll need to give us more details; tell us what browser you're using on what device, and give us some specific examples of posts which don't play for you

GIFs currently generate samples when they aren't meant to, do they play if you click the "download" button underneath the post?

ah, i found one example,
the sample for post #2172648 got turned into a jpeg:

If its not working could be your phone not wanting to play enable javascript if that doesnt work you may need an upgrade
