I'm extremely new to the site I've been a long-time lurker, but I have a question

Creepy comments have a bad reputation on here and I feel like most of them are harmless, I know this topic has been talked to death..

But I honestly see a creepy comment as something that could be funny if worded correctly, if you're subtle about it and not exactly excessive or downright disgusting, is it allowed?

I'm not saying that comments like "I want to fuck her so bad" are not creepy but they're not funny either, I guess what I'm asking is can we make a comment that's a little bit creepy but not creepy enough to make somebody entirely uncomfortable but just you know a funny joke.

I've gotten a neutral record for this comment with the following note: "Nice ref, still creepy." This is a clear example that there is no differentiation between a joke and a creepy comment. If a joke is objectively creepy when taken out of context, it means you can get a record. You could argue that this is bullshit and it's very restrictive, but if the rules were meant to be applied according to context, it would cause more problems for the moderation and create many grey areas.

So, it's best to refrain from posting anything remotely creepy, because the moderation doesn't take context into consideration when handing out records.

You can mention what you like about the image, but not what you'd like to do with or based off the image. There is no such thing as a joke on the internet (somebody will always take it out of the humorous context); if it's creepy it's creepy.

That one falls into roleplay, which is considered another "creepy: do not do" category. The staff at least acknowledged that yeah, that one was more obviously a joke, but they still can't treat it as one to discourage accidents.

Even we have to be careful on when and when not to be flirty on a picture, even if the artist makes a picture that encourages onlookers to flirt on their artwork.

If an artist is okay with it, it still has to be on their own gallery, not on e621.

Really don't think something could be "objectively" creepy, but thank you that was helpful..

Example of a slightly creepy joke would be something from like a Jimmy Carr stand up, not really explaining in detail what you want to do to a character..

And yeah it is bullshit, people need to get a sense of humor, but.. Alright then I'll keep it in mind

There are lots of snowflakes who will find creepy andor offensive just anything that disagrees with their views, so they will report things like

Fox anus main purpouse is fucking, pooping is second.

as creepy because there is an stereotype in the comment.

I noticed.. Just got my first downvote, mainly because it was discussing animal anatomy sometimes being uncomfortable to people, like pussy's and penises

It's a good rule. This place was a cesspool before Bad Dragon took over and implemented that rules and others. And more importantly the comments were making some artists go DNP, and that is something e6 would like to avoid

Well... that is an issue I guess, really don't want to alienate artists, but I really do think the rule is enforced a little unfairly.

I'm not talking about deliberate statements about fucking a character, but just.. you know a little bit of dark humor that might involve something slightly uncomfortable, but still funny.

I'm not here to cause trouble I will respect the rule and try to be careful

It's whatever people want it to be at any given time depending on how they're feeling. Being here for over a decade, I can tell you logic left the popular cliques and staff a long time ago.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you want to see what this place would look like without the rule against creepy comments, or even a site where deleting comments on your work is frowned upon, just take a stroll through the comments on Literotica stories. Brr.

I've been there and it's nothing on the level I'm describing. I'm talking about people who leave comments that are not just grossly inappropriate, they go above and beyond. Essentially writing summaries for the stories using the skeeviest terms possible in a way that makes it sound like a classic book review like you'd see on the inside of the jacket on hardcover books. I'm all for people being able to say what they want, but some things just go too far even for me.

I have rarely seen those kinds of comments as I'm quite picky with my categories, but I can feel it. I can feel it's worse if they're written by anonymous reviews.

The worst I've seen has probably been on Gelbooru, Loli is prevailent on there.

I mean sure it's not real no problem with it, but... Some of the things people say on there about the characters are incredibly disturbing... and it's very hard to disturb me

it was supposed to be funny, because I was referencing game mechanics, but I guess even slightly creepy humor we'll just not do well here.. it's only got one downvote but it will probably grow..

I just want to let anybody who still looks at this thread know that I do not intend to disrupt order here, I just want to have a good time with other like-minded individuals.

To me, since I'm not familiar with Animal Crossing, it's an indifference for me, but it's still off-color and might be taken out of context.

So, you want people to have a good time here, and you want to do it by sharing a few laughs with them--that's great! Your heart's in the right place.

Based on the things you've said in this thread, you've got all the pieces to the puzzle, but you're having some trouble seeing how it all fits together. That's fine, too! You're smart enough to know when you need to ask for some help. You made this thread, after all!

So, let's take a look at what you've figured out so far (in no particular order)...

• It's better with friends - You understand that jokes need to be tailored to your audience, and it works better when their sense of humor matches yours.
• Some of the things people say on there ... are incredibly disturbing... and it's very hard to disturb me - You know where your limits are, and those guys crossed it without even making a joke.
• I've been a long-time lurker - You've gotten to know how the site works.
• can we make a comment that's a little bit creepy but not creepy enough to make somebody entirely uncomfortable but just you know a funny joke and really don't want to alienate artists - You care about how your actions affect other people, and want to do right by them.
• did I word it wrong or cross a line? - You recognize that your joke didn't land, and that it might be because you're doing something wrong.

(Seriously, those last two points take a lot of self-awareness and self-reflection, which a ton of other people just don't manage to do.)

Now, let's put these things together:

• Know your audience - Jimmy Carr has a hidden advantage here, because he's stacking the deck: his audience chooses to go to his shows. They want to be there and hear his jokes, so he knows that he'll get a good response before he even starts (his stuff is great by the way, thanks for that). On the other hand, you've got a tough crowd: you know how the site works, so you know that comments on posts can be seen and read by everyone, including people who don't have an account or aren't logged in.

Instead of playing to just your friends that you know pretty well, or a theater full of like-minded people, it's more like putting up a billboard in a busy airport - it's up there in front of thousands of people, who are from all sorts of backgrounds and experiences, and your billboard is just something they happen to look at on their way to somewhere else. Unlike doing stand-up, you don't get to read the room and switch gears if something falls flat. Also notice just how many comedians don't continue to explain a joke if it stumbles - there's a reason for that!

• Everyone's different, and there's nothing wrong with that - So you don't get to pick your audience, which means there are going to be people seeing that billboard whose sense of humor doesn't fit with yours. This doesn't mean that they don't have a sense of humor, or that they're being too sensitive. They don't know you, won't have the time to get to know you, and even if they did, it's still really hard to tell whether someone on the Internet is making a joke, or being completely serious, because too many people can and do say these things completely seriously, all the time, both online and offline.

Let's take the comments on Gelbooru that you thought were incredibly disturbing. I will say, that your post has made me want to continue making jokes on here, because I was about to give up. I was only making regular comments at that point, because I was getting scared of even posting a joke anymore, and you're right I can't figure out what the audience is here, but it's just there's a lot of posts that have tons of upvotes that are creepy.

its funny because they get marked for it, like the known legend tiamat. I found them hilarious, I guess it's because I've learned to not take anything too seriously, I think I got a little too comfortable with that lol.

I really don't want to alienate artists as I said, but I also don't want to feel like I can't be myself.. I do get it though, it was a mistake I should have said a different type of joke, I won't do it again.. simple as that.

On a side note: Glad you actually are getting into Jimmy Carr, I don't know what makes him so funny to me, it's not even my favorite type of humor, but his condescending act, and light-hearted approach to all things terrible, it's just hilarious to me.

I see it as: you're supposed to be kind of uncomfortable. that's part of the joke, but not so uncomfortable to the point where the humor is just lost.

you're right though it's definitely hard to translate that correctly through text..without sounding like a total sociopath..haha..

I'll stick to more.. relatable jokes on a broader perspective, that work well through text form.

Don't worry so much about it. Humor is like baseball. All you can do is step up to the plate and take a swing. Oftentimes, you'll strike out. Occasionally, you'll pop a foul. A rare few times, you'll hit a home run right out of the park. Most of the time, when you make a successful hit, you'll end up bouncing around the field. And let's face it. No matter how much you've earned your way into the Hall of Fame, a majority of your audience simply doesn't care about your chosen game, and many might even hate it. They aren't wrong any more than you are.

A few downvotes will happen regardless of how funny you are. So, you swung and missed. It happens. At least no one is taking you to task for being creepy, so you're good. Let it go, and take another swing, adapting your technique as you go. Rinse and repeat.

In the end, all you can do is to keep learning when to swing and, just as importantly, when not to. It's a lifelong process that some people have a knack for and others couldn't find the dugout if you gave them a map and a guide. You'll probably find yourself somewhere in the middle.

Circumcision can be a touchy topic vote-wise even when you're not talking about the act of it.
As long as you're not saying anything bannable your comment score really doesn't matter much, but if you want to use it as a learning experience then go ahead.

In the end, all you can do is to keep learning when to swing and, just as importantly, when not to. It's a lifelong process that some people have a knack for and others couldn't find the dugout if you gave them a map and a guide. You'll probably find yourself somewhere in the middle.

My own social anxiety, and insecurity makes me think of upvotes as points of personally value.. It sounds pathetic I know, I just have to learn to not take it so hard.

I seriously might make a new thread titled "what kind of humor is accepted here?" Because that comment now has 15 downvotes, I left for a few days to take a break, clear my head, comments are hidden, but are still getting downvoted to hell..

I'm starting to think my sense of humor might not even be welcome here, I mean I might only be able to do observational comedy or just nothing dark or even slightly offensive at all, I'm not even intending to offend, I really don't know what to do. Guess I should take some of the people to heart here and to just let it go, not a good first impression on the site though on my part. I just want to let everybody know that I'm not trying to attack any minority or religious group or really anything they're just jokes, so I'm sorry if the jokes paint me as an insensitive person because I really don't want to give off that impression, I mean the fact that I'm even on this site must mean I'm pretty open-minded right?

Anyway thanks for tolerating my bullshit, for the people who has responded and helped me, I'm trying to take your advice, but I'm inherently reckless at nature it's my own fault, but I'll get better it'll just take time.

Looking at the comment, you were making a joke about the speed, which would be okay--but took it too far by equating friction to circumcision. A more appropriate joke would be "Jeez at that speed he's going to end up with burns." That may still get some downvotes but it won't enter downvote hell.
Your inclusion of "don't let me come off as creepy" sugggests you realized that equating it to circumcision is a questionable point, so any time you start thinking like that, you may as well tone it down.

All I can say is don't focus too much on that joke. Just be observant, but not too observant on what you think and say, and move on.

Yeah I am trying to be more careful now, that last bit was supposed to be a bit of self-deprecation humor, basically making fun of myself for supposedly being creepy in my last comment, the whole "owning only one type of trench coat and only selling sundials" was suppose to be making fun of the creepy part, but I guess people took it too seriously, to be honest, I didn't even know circumcision jokes were even offensive, I'm not offended by most things in the first place and just thought it was clever, definetely never doing that again lol, also I'm sorry this is probably annoying everyone by now, but I do greatly appreciate the feedback.

Hey man, I'm pretty much the same way, I have the same impulsivity, to be honest, I would rather be able to say what I want without worrying about offending someone, the only reason why I stop and apologize is that I don't want to alienate artists, and I don't want to give people the impression that I am a terrible person, I want to remind people that joke's don't tell you who a person is, even if I made a racist joke, it doesn't make me actually racist.

Edit: I notice you haven't really commented here. so you are probably talking about other places, all I can say is try to be self-aware of where you are, and who you are around. Because improper and offensive is highly subjective, its all about your enviroment. (I'm learning that pretty quickly)

Been a long time since I've posted in this thread that I've made, just wanted to ask a question..

I'm thinking of making a joke thread, where people can post their jokes, as I would post mine, maybe get constructive criticism on how to improve the joke. Might help any aspiring Jokers, improve their craft

I'm not sure if anyone cares about that kind of thing, but sometimes people post their jokes on extremely obscure pictures, and no matter how funny the joke is it doesn't get any exposure, because of how obscure the picture is nobody will see it.

I'm probably one of the few people that cares about creating quality jokes and takes it a little too seriously, so anyway I just want to know if I want to make that thread where would I have to make it? In general? Or somewhere else?
