Topic: The line between a creepy comment and a joke

Posted under General

I'm extremely new to the site I've been a long-time lurker, but I have a question

Creepy comments have a bad reputation on here and I feel like most of them are harmless, I know this topic has been talked to death..

But I honestly see a creepy comment as something that could be funny if worded correctly, if you're subtle about it and not exactly excessive or downright disgusting, is it allowed?

I'm not saying that comments like "I want to fuck her so bad" are not creepy but they're not funny either, I guess what I'm asking is can we make a comment that's a little bit creepy but not creepy enough to make somebody entirely uncomfortable but just you know a funny joke.

I've gotten a neutral record for this comment with the following note: "Nice ref, still creepy." This is a clear example that there is no differentiation between a joke and a creepy comment. If a joke is objectively creepy when taken out of context, it means you can get a record. You could argue that this is bullshit and it's very restrictive, but if the rules were meant to be applied according to context, it would cause more problems for the moderation and create many grey areas.

So, it's best to refrain from posting anything remotely creepy, because the moderation doesn't take context into consideration when handing out records.

You can mention what you like about the image, but not what you'd like to do with or based off the image. There is no such thing as a joke on the internet (somebody will always take it out of the humorous context); if it's creepy it's creepy.

That one falls into roleplay, which is considered another "creepy: do not do" category. The staff at least acknowledged that yeah, that one was more obviously a joke, but they still can't treat it as one to discourage accidents.

Even we have to be careful on when and when not to be flirty on a picture, even if the artist makes a picture that encourages onlookers to flirt on their artwork.

If an artist is okay with it, it still has to be on their own gallery, not on e621.

Really don't think something could be "objectively" creepy, but thank you that was helpful..

Example of a slightly creepy joke would be something from like a Jimmy Carr stand up, not really explaining in detail what you want to do to a character..

And yeah it is bullshit, people need to get a sense of humor, but.. Alright then I'll keep it in mind

Appreciate the response.

I'll try my luck on it, if I get even one warning, I'll stop immediately..

I get it, it's better with friends and not here, I could fight it...buuut, don't wanna get banned so I'll drop it.

There are lots of snowflakes who will find creepy andor offensive just anything that disagrees with their views, so they will report things like

Fox anus main purpouse is fucking, pooping is second.

as creepy because there is an stereotype in the comment.

I noticed.. Just got my first downvote, mainly because it was discussing animal anatomy sometimes being uncomfortable to people, like pussy's and penises

I figured it was going to happen no matter how respectful I was about it. /Shrugs

Just don't mention what would you do in/with x situation/character. xd

Completely off topic.. But I love your art >~<

And yeah I was mainly just talking about clever creep humor jokes, Jimmy Carr is a good example of slightly uncomfortable but still hilarious.

You know, someone might just think you are rude. If you got no mark for it, no on thought it was creepy. What you stated would not get you in trouble.

So dunno what you are going on about.

It's a good rule. This place was a cesspool before Bad Dragon took over and implemented that rules and others. And more importantly the comments were making some artists go DNP, and that is something e6 would like to avoid

Well... that is an issue I guess, really don't want to alienate artists, but I really do think the rule is enforced a little unfairly.

I'm not talking about deliberate statements about fucking a character, but just.. you know a little bit of dark humor that might involve something slightly uncomfortable, but still funny.

I'm not here to cause trouble I will respect the rule and try to be careful

It's whatever people want it to be at any given time depending on how they're feeling. Being here for over a decade, I can tell you logic left the popular cliques and staff a long time ago.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you want to see what this place would look like without the rule against creepy comments, or even a site where deleting comments on your work is frowned upon, just take a stroll through the comments on Literotica stories. Brr.

Or worse, anonymous comments on Paheal and Rule34DotXXX... shudders.

I've been there and it's nothing on the level I'm describing. I'm talking about people who leave comments that are not just grossly inappropriate, they go above and beyond. Essentially writing summaries for the stories using the skeeviest terms possible in a way that makes it sound like a classic book review like you'd see on the inside of the jacket on hardcover books. I'm all for people being able to say what they want, but some things just go too far even for me.

I have rarely seen those kinds of comments as I'm quite picky with my categories, but I can feel it. I can feel it's worse if they're written by anonymous reviews.

The worst I've seen has probably been on Gelbooru, Loli is prevailent on there.

I mean sure it's not real no problem with it, but... Some of the things people say on there about the characters are incredibly disturbing... and it's very hard to disturb me

I think I fucked up.. I think I said my first creepy comment.

I didn't mention what I wanted to do to the character, or even any fetishes.

it was supposed to be funny, because I was referencing game mechanics, but I guess even slightly creepy humor we'll just not do well here.. it's only got one downvote but it will probably grow..

Guys you can make fun of me all you want, but I'm just not used to commenting publicly anywhere, I'm not trying to complain but I am genuinely trying to entertain people.. not offend

I just want to let anybody who still looks at this thread know that I do not intend to disrupt order here, I just want to have a good time with other like-minded individuals.

You can always hide the comment if you think it breaks the rules.

Yeah I guess you're right, I just don't get it though some people have some creepy comments that are funny and nobody bats an eye, maybe it was the way I worded it? idk

If you feel like somebody else has posted a creepy comment, and it's a recent comment, report it.

Well alright, but can I get an opinion on mine? did I word it wrong or cross a line?

To me, since I'm not familiar with Animal Crossing, it's an indifference for me, but it's still off-color and might be taken out of context.

Alright.. guess I'll hide it, no more those kind of jokes then, lesson learned.

Edit: It looks like you already get the picture, but I'll leave this up in case somebody gets something out of it.

I just want to let anybody who still looks at this thread know that I do not intend to disrupt order here, I just want to have a good time with other like-minded individuals.

So, you want people to have a good time here, and you want to do it by sharing a few laughs with them--that's great! Your heart's in the right place.

Based on the things you've said in this thread, you've got all the pieces to the puzzle, but you're having some trouble seeing how it all fits together. That's fine, too! You're smart enough to know when you need to ask for some help. You made this thread, after all!

So, let's take a look at what you've figured out so far (in no particular order)...

(Seriously, those last two points take a lot of self-awareness and self-reflection, which a ton of other people just don't manage to do.)

Now, let's put these things together:

  • Know your audience - Jimmy Carr has a hidden advantage here, because he's stacking the deck: his audience chooses to go to his shows. They want to be there and hear his jokes, so he knows that he'll get a good response before he even starts (his stuff is great by the way, thanks for that). On the other hand, you've got a tough crowd: you know how the site works, so you know that comments on posts can be seen and read by everyone, including people who don't have an account or aren't logged in.

Instead of playing to just your friends that you know pretty well, or a theater full of like-minded people, it's more like putting up a billboard in a busy airport - it's up there in front of thousands of people, who are from all sorts of backgrounds and experiences, and your billboard is just something they happen to look at on their way to somewhere else. Unlike doing stand-up, you don't get to read the room and switch gears if something falls flat. Also notice just how many comedians don't continue to explain a joke if it stumbles - there's a reason for that!

  • Everyone's different, and there's nothing wrong with that - So you don't get to pick your audience, which means there are going to be people seeing that billboard whose sense of humor doesn't fit with yours. This doesn't mean that they don't have a sense of humor, or that they're being too sensitive. They don't know you, won't have the time to get to know you, and even if they did, it's still really hard to tell whether someone on the Internet is making a joke, or being completely serious, because too many people can and do say these things completely seriously, all the time, both online and offline.

Let's take the comments on Gelbooru that you thought were incredibly disturbing. It's a pretty good bet that they actually thought they were making a joke and being funny, playing up the disturbing aspect and engaging in a little transgressive humor. The problem is that nobody else knows that, because all there is to go on is a few lines of text that come off as extremely creepy.
This is where you are right now. Nobody expects you to know the limits of all the people who might see your joke, but you know they have limits, and you know those limits are different from yours, because their life and their experiences have given them a different sense of humor (again, not no sense of humor, just a different one). Think of it as everyone having eyeglasses stuck to their face (including you!), and not knowing that they're wearing them or that they're stuck. The luckiest people can figure it out and sometimes get to peek around them, but they're still stuck with them most of the time.
Just like the people on Gelbooru said something that ran right over your limits--without even being aware that you exist!--a joke that to you is 'worded correctly' and 'subtle' enough to be 'a little bit creepy' but be still funny to you can run right over someone else, and it's not their fault. Remember that you're posting to a billboard in an airport - the people in the airport aren't going there just to see your billboard (but because it's right there, they have to look at it anyway), it can't explain that it's making a joke and not actually being serious, and everyone's looking at what is posted there through their own glasses. Sometimes a part gets magnified to them, while that part looks small to you, or doesn't even look like it's there. Sometimes that part is slightly uncomfortable, but ends up looking incredibly disturbing. Nobody meant it to appear that way, it just happened because life is complicated like that. The trouble is, the effects are still real.

  • Don't be creepy - So, that's not great. People should be able to have a good time, and if artists aren't having a good time and ask to be put on the DNP list, then you lose out on their art and contributions to the site--that sucks for everyone, and nobody wants that.

So what can you do? You don't want your jokes to make people too uncomfortable, because that would suck for them. You also don't want to contribute to making artists feel too uncomfortable and scare them away from the site ('contribute' is the key word here, because it's rarely just one person--one kazoo player can be funny. A hundred kazoo players following you everywhere that you can't get away from gets old really fast).

Well, since you can't know your audience (because you're putting up an airport billboard that everyone will see), you won't know what's going to make someone too uncomfortable (because everyone's limits are different, and you can't and aren't expected to know what all of them are). That leaves you guessing blindly, and running all over other people without knowing that you're doing it (because something that's just on the limit for you will be too much for someone else, like those people on Gelbooru who thought they were joking). And the effects of guessing wrong are real (because it'll make people too uncomfortable or incredibly disturbed, and because artists will leave, and then nobody will be having a good time).

In other words--it's not a line, but a big, messy, vague, and ever-shifting place that only looks like a line from far away, but is actually full of half-buried landmines and rocks to trip over and is absolutely swarming with blind kazoo players running all over people, each one of them wondering why there are so many rocks and why people complain about them playing their one kazoo. Sometimes, somebody steps on a landmine.

Nobody is having a good time in there.

Jesus dude I don't know what to say, I guess I could start off by saying thank you for your kind words and your extremely helpful advice..

The fact you even went to such an extent of explaining yourself, in such an in depth way, on my behalf (as well as others) is amazing.

You are a beautiful human being sir/ma'm

Man where do I start.. this is such a long post, I really need to digest it, I really don't want to make such a half-ass response to such a meaningful reply.

Sorry I need to study the d text tools better, so my reply will not be as well formulated as yours.

I will say, that your post has made me want to continue making jokes on here, because I was about to give up. I was only making regular comments at that point, because I was getting scared of even posting a joke anymore, and you're right I can't figure out what the audience is here, but it's just there's a lot of posts that have tons of upvotes that are creepy.

its funny because they get marked for it, like the known legend tiamat. I found them hilarious, I guess it's because I've learned to not take anything too seriously, I think I got a little too comfortable with that lol.

I really don't want to alienate artists as I said, but I also don't want to feel like I can't be myself.. I do get it though, it was a mistake I should have said a different type of joke, I won't do it again.. simple as that.

On a side note: Glad you actually are getting into Jimmy Carr, I don't know what makes him so funny to me, it's not even my favorite type of humor, but his condescending act, and light-hearted approach to all things terrible, it's just hilarious to me.

I see it as: you're supposed to be kind of uncomfortable. that's part of the joke, but not so uncomfortable to the point where the humor is just lost.

you're right though it's definitely hard to translate that correctly through text..without sounding like a total sociopath..haha..

I'll stick to more.. relatable jokes on a broader perspective, that work well through text form.

slightly creepy jokes will never work I guess.

Thank you again for your amazing response, I'm honestly not worth it.

Here's hoping we can all still have a good time!

PS: also thank you for acknowledging, that I'm not a terrible person who enjoys making people uncomfortable, and that I also have no regards for the consequences for the actual artists.

Even we have to be careful on when and when not to be flirty on a picture, even if the artist makes a picture that encourages onlookers to flirt on their artwork.

Probably bored because of the lockdown I suppose.

Yeah I was going to say..I swore someone else said this

I swear the last comment I made, wasn't even creepy and it still got downvoted..

Idk what I'm doing wrong, is it just not funny at all?

I've had a few comments on here do well, but this one was probably the most well formed one

I'm sorry that this thread is turning into "rate my jokes"

It's probably annoying, I apologise

Don't worry so much about it. Humor is like baseball. All you can do is step up to the plate and take a swing. Oftentimes, you'll strike out. Occasionally, you'll pop a foul. A rare few times, you'll hit a home run right out of the park. Most of the time, when you make a successful hit, you'll end up bouncing around the field. And let's face it. No matter how much you've earned your way into the Hall of Fame, a majority of your audience simply doesn't care about your chosen game, and many might even hate it. They aren't wrong any more than you are.

A few downvotes will happen regardless of how funny you are. So, you swung and missed. It happens. At least no one is taking you to task for being creepy, so you're good. Let it go, and take another swing, adapting your technique as you go. Rinse and repeat.

In the end, all you can do is to keep learning when to swing and, just as importantly, when not to. It's a lifelong process that some people have a knack for and others couldn't find the dugout if you gave them a map and a guide. You'll probably find yourself somewhere in the middle.

Circumcision can be a touchy topic vote-wise even when you're not talking about the act of it.
As long as you're not saying anything bannable your comment score really doesn't matter much, but if you want to use it as a learning experience then go ahead.

Those metaphors are beautiful lol, anyway.. I'm sorry I keep whining about this, thank you for your help

The joke was suppose to be self satire, making fun of myself for the last creepy comment I said

I guess I'll keep trying, but did any of you find it funny at all?

Yeah I will I guess, I'm honestly getting tongue tied here though, I'm running out of ideas, I'm not trying to offend, the circumcized joke was suppose to be clever..

My own social anxiety, and insecurity makes me think of upvotes as points of personally value.. It sounds pathetic I know, I just have to learn to not take it so hard.

i'd just leave your opinion no matter what, someone is going to be offended and other person is going to giggle.
if its super unanimous of a shitty comment/joke it gets hidden anyways now.

I seriously might make a new thread titled "what kind of humor is accepted here?" Because that comment now has 15 downvotes, I left for a few days to take a break, clear my head, comments are hidden, but are still getting downvoted to hell..

I'm starting to think my sense of humor might not even be welcome here, I mean I might only be able to do observational comedy or just nothing dark or even slightly offensive at all, I'm not even intending to offend, I really don't know what to do. Guess I should take some of the people to heart here and to just let it go, not a good first impression on the site though on my part. I just want to let everybody know that I'm not trying to attack any minority or religious group or really anything they're just jokes, so I'm sorry if the jokes paint me as an insensitive person because I really don't want to give off that impression, I mean the fact that I'm even on this site must mean I'm pretty open-minded right?

Anyway thanks for tolerating my bullshit, for the people who has responded and helped me, I'm trying to take your advice, but I'm inherently reckless at nature it's my own fault, but I'll get better it'll just take time.

Looking at the comment, you were making a joke about the speed, which would be okay--but took it too far by equating friction to circumcision. A more appropriate joke would be "Jeez at that speed he's going to end up with burns." That may still get some downvotes but it won't enter downvote hell.
Your inclusion of "don't let me come off as creepy" sugggests you realized that equating it to circumcision is a questionable point, so any time you start thinking like that, you may as well tone it down.

All I can say is don't focus too much on that joke. Just be observant, but not too observant on what you think and say, and move on.

Yeah I am trying to be more careful now, that last bit was supposed to be a bit of self-deprecation humor, basically making fun of myself for supposedly being creepy in my last comment, the whole "owning only one type of trench coat and only selling sundials" was suppose to be making fun of the creepy part, but I guess people took it too seriously, to be honest, I didn't even know circumcision jokes were even offensive, I'm not offended by most things in the first place and just thought it was clever, definetely never doing that again lol, also I'm sorry this is probably annoying everyone by now, but I do greatly appreciate the feedback.

Yeah, thanks, I'll try to do that, I do have a problem of dwelling on negative things too much, I just don't want end up hated here, over just "jokes" you know?

What do you mean?

Just made me think how rare I think what I post before I post and how many things that I've posted are very improper and offensive to some people in retrospect.

Hey man, I'm pretty much the same way, I have the same impulsivity, to be honest, I would rather be able to say what I want without worrying about offending someone, the only reason why I stop and apologize is that I don't want to alienate artists, and I don't want to give people the impression that I am a terrible person, I want to remind people that joke's don't tell you who a person is, even if I made a racist joke, it doesn't make me actually racist.

There is always room for improvement man, good luck.

Edit: I notice you haven't really commented here. so you are probably talking about other places, all I can say is try to be self-aware of where you are, and who you are around. Because improper and offensive is highly subjective, its all about your enviroment. (I'm learning that pretty quickly)

Hope this helps.

obviously just have a combo of accounts used for leaving unfunny comments like me :DD

Don't do that, that's how you get every single account permabanned, rather than one single account temporarily banned.

I'm sure when I get more comfortable here I might be able to come up with better material, I've hit a few home runs, just got to keep stepping up to the plate.

and I'll be damned if I make several accounts to spam like that that's not what I'm here for, I'm here to have a good time lol

Been a long time since I've posted in this thread that I've made, just wanted to ask a question..

I'm thinking of making a joke thread, where people can post their jokes, as I would post mine, maybe get constructive criticism on how to improve the joke. Might help any aspiring Jokers, improve their craft

I'm not sure if anyone cares about that kind of thing, but sometimes people post their jokes on extremely obscure pictures, and no matter how funny the joke is it doesn't get any exposure, because of how obscure the picture is nobody will see it.

I'm probably one of the few people that cares about creating quality jokes and takes it a little too seriously, so anyway I just want to know if I want to make that thread where would I have to make it? In general? Or somewhere else?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
