Topic: Am I allowed to make edits to replace images?

Posted under Art Talk

I see that two images (post #2332528 and post #2332529) have been updated while two others didn't, and the artist only uploaded the two on FA.

Can anybody tell me if it's possible to submit edits to replace other images as superior versions? I can easily remake post #2083273 in higher res with just the two here, but there would be a little effort involved in removing lactation for post #2071520. From that point I could also make the other four variations anyway just for completion's sake.

that's a negative. Edits never replace the originals from the artist, and upscales are (almost) always deleted. There is an entry about edits in the upload guidelines https://e621.net/help/uploading_guidelines

If I understand what you want to do correctly, than I'm pretty sure that all the edits you suggested doing would be considered low effort and probably deleted.

Please read carefully. I'm not simply upscaling. I am merging two images to make the third that is now in higher res.

Edit: The guidelines states "artificial" upscales are bad edits. I'd like to think this would qualify as natural upscaling since all I have to do is replace someone's head with one from another image.

Combination edits also fall under low quality/effort edits.
Our aim is to still provide users with as original copies of stuff as possible, meaning that if editing is as easy as overlaying two images in photoshop and using eraser, they can easily do that themselves in 5 seconds. Worst part about this is that with some images there are many ways of doing them and situations where from 3 official alts we have 20 edits haven't been uncommon.

The problems with combination edits are that most popular form has been intersex edits, which have resulted into extremely angry takedowns on the site. Additionally there has been cases where edits have not been disclosed in any capacity, leading us to delete original copies over edits, which is really bad. On top of this, as we do not allow other low quality/effort edits on the site, combination edits were kinda slipping by because the end products usually were obviously good looking, even though they demand even less time and talent from edits we were already deleting.

If you still want to share such edits with other users, linking from third party file/image host in comments or description is perfectly fine.

True. It would be rather low-effort, and I could possibly deceive people since my skills are decent enough. I've managed to add clothing a few times, but not modify body parts. Sometimes merging pics requires a bit of effort though in the case of colors shifting or what you want to merge has overlaps.
Uploading the edits in question here would be a serious gray area as well, since it's essentially creating content found only behind a paywall. That was why I opted to make a thread before trying to make the edits. I do plan to be transparent with my edits anyway with a subtle watermark to at least acknowledge the pictures were edited.

I'll just work on one version that actually requires effort then. Thanks.

Ah, that's something to be wary of as well. If you make a version of something, and the edited version can be found behind a paywall you open yourself up to records regarding pirated content. So I wouldn't suggest linking those types in description or comments. But like, if it's something that wouldn't be behind a paywall you should be fine.
