Topic: The ych_(character) tag

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

So I just came across this tag, ych_(character), which is supposed to contain images like this:

post #2393106 post #1895977

But due to the fact ych is aliased to it, the tag has been absolutely overwhelmed by people tagging art that was sold as a YCH-type auction. I'm willing to go through and fix the mistagging, but I fear leaving the alias in place is only going to continue to be mistagged.

Additionally I think there could be a better name for this tag, (placeholder_character? or something similar) one that would be inclusive of other things like you, me, etc.

post #2142303

anon already has two wiki-acknowledged flavours, I don't see the problem with including this more general-furry equivalent as a third.

I'd personally vote for just de-aliasing ych from ych_(character). Then change ych to an invalid tag. The mistagging would definitely need to be cleaned up before anything else is done or decided.

I can see some small value in ych_(character) being its own tag, since there's a different context going into incomplete YCHs than there is with anon posts. But if they stay separate, I'd say maybe implicate the former to anon, or implicate them both to some kind of umbrella.

I agree that the tags should be de-aliased, but I believe that ych should be made a disabiguation tag instead.

There is already a ych_result tag, which could be used for the results of YCH auctions. ych_(character) can stay in its current role.

If disambiguation tags are made into invalid ones, then the ych tag would therefore be made invalid anyways. (Note: invalid category, not aliased to invalid_tag.) That's where I was going with that, sorry. I should've specified. But... Yeah, it'd be better off disambiguated regardless of what happens with the other *_(disambiguation) tags.

The bulk update request #2300 is active.

remove alias ych (0) -> ych_(character) (1840)
remove alias your_character_here (0) -> ych_(character) (1840)

Reason: I tried cleaning this a while back and it's worse than ever - I guess I never actually proposed the unalias BUR.

Part 2

alias ych -> ych_(disambiguation)
alias your_character_here -> ych_(disambiguation)
category ych_(disambiguation) -> invalid

EDIT: The bulk update request #2300 (forum #332134) has been approved by @bitWolfy.

I think I've said it elsewhere, but I don't think ych_result should be a valid tag. We don't tag when a piece of art was made as a commission (commission_art and all them are invalid), or as a gift (gift_art is invalid) or as personal art, so there's no reason it should be tagged when it was made as a YCH. I'd recommend aliasing ych and ych_result -> ych_(disambiguation), and have the ych_(disambiguation) wiki say to use ych_(character) for blank/anon characters in unfinished YCH images, and nothing for finished art made as a result of a YCH.

I agree - I've considered making a request to make it invalid a few times but I'm not sure if topic #31050 needs to be rejected first or not. Some people argued for the fact YCHs often have multiple versions but it's pretty often they don't too, I don't see how a tag like multiple_versions wouldn't be much more fitting for the situation...
