Topic: [Feature] Spherical (360-degree) image display support

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Proper display of images that can be rotated spherically. An example is post #2457402, which at its source can be rotated around by clicking and dragging, but the raw image looks like a distorted panorama. Being able to view it properly and pan it around like in its original presentation would be a nice feature.

While that would be pretty nice, there's 14 posts tagged with panorama and a decent amount of them aren't even panoramic images, so it would seem like a waste of time implementing this. Especially when people can just click to the source and see it there.

"People can see it at the source" isn't really a good reason not to, given that sources sometimes disappear (and particularly for TwoKinds, special pages like these don't always stay up). It would be a shame for the source to go down and not have an easy way to view the image as intended. Or maybe the source could be difficult to get to, or have some other issues that make it unpleasant to use. There's a reason people like to come here to see images rather than the sources, after all.

360_image and there's software like Whirigig which works with VR headsets.

This has also been discussed in past at forum #231765, not sure if this is any level of high priority considering that over the years there's only 12 posts and if/when the feature is implemented, it simply requires the regular image file, which we are already hosting at that point and only need to embed it differendly.

If it explodes in popularity, then we should think about using a JavaScript framework that can handle the files, whether they are equirectangular panoramic images and videos, or some other format. I liked A-Frame back when I first tried it.

Not much has happened in the three years since I made that thread. There needs to be a lot more headset owners and active users. Furry VR art will probably lag behind the trend since it's a niche.
