Topic: [Feature] Re-Implement Persistent Forum Category Selection

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Requested feature overview description.

Allow registered users to select certain forum categories they wish to see each time they view the forum listing. The category selection would be kept (e.g. in a cookie, etc.) so the user doesn't have to select it each time they visit. Categories not selected would not appear in the user's listing.

Why would it be useful?

The feature would help users filter out posts they know they don't want to see. It would be especially useful for users who aren't interested in tagging, aliases, implications, and bulk update requests. It would also help filter the massive amounts of posts that are generated by the auto-moderator. Similarly, for users focused on contributing to the site, it would let them filter out the off-topic discussions while they work.

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?

Forum go BURRRRRRR

Yes, true, though that's a very good thing for the site and it's not my intent to complain about it. That should continue! This change would give users an extra tool to tune into the content they want to see and be part of.

By no means am I implying that users should feel obligated to look at (and/or vote on) BURs; However, a certain level of community engagement (that in my opinion is not currently being achieved) is necessary for the refinement of the tagging system. Without any input from anyone but the same three people who bother to look at anything, it is likely that some changes could leave many unsatisfied. That issue is solved when differing points of view are shared in the appropriate topics.

For example, if @Watsit had not told me that belly and abdomen have different meanings as tags, I would have put forward a proposal based on incorrect assumptions and many posts that should not have the belly tag would by necessity have tags that imply it. That would break searching.

I understand that many see the forum as a "boring" place, perhaps with the exception of the "Art Talk" and "Off Topic" categories, but tag relationships are quite relevant for the appreciation of posts. Please consider skimming a few bulk update requests in the future, or at least standalone alias/implication requests. One of those could make it harder for you to find your favorite things, and both of us would be saddened by that.

I look at them frequently and comment whenever the topic is something I have any knowledge of or opinion on. We still need to give users the option, however, don't you think?

Unilaterally BUR threads need their own category and need to be hideable. I get theyre important but, when it comes to 4 pages of automoderator pops it becomes impossible to use the forum.
