Is a kimono really topwear? I'm no expert on Japanese clothing so maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to be more of a full-body covering akin to a dress.

Agreed. The wiki calls it a robe, so maybe that instead of topwear?

Yeah, I think Kimono is Not topwear, too.
And as @faucet and @Nekozuki said, sometimes it's explained as Japanse_Dress.

My mother just told me that,
"They are basically one piece of clothing, with no separate top and bottom".
(( In kimono, the top and bottom may be separated to make it easier to wear, but it's not to use only one side. ))
