I almost feel like it should be invalid, if anything. If the tags are for pictures made/published in that year, then short of some time-traveler, anyone trying to use it before then would be using it for the wrong purpose and would be invalid. Some current uses of 2021 are actually incorrect, unless the meaning is expanded.

There's been a 2021 tag since November when someone decided to get a jump on the upcoming Year of the Ox. So, I put it at the very end of this BUR , where it would also be implicated to the umbrella tag of modern_era.

Addendum ~ I've removed it from my BUR so that Watsit's BUR can safely go through. The tag 2021 shouldn't be held hostage to a BUR that still needs fiddling with to get right.

Yes, and if we search -modern-era, we'd be able get all the relatively few pictures that were made before 1980. Just as anthro would cover a huge and unwieldy chunk of e621 by itself, but is meant to be searched in conjunction with other tags or even be excluded from searches.

Sorry, I decided that my original comment would be better suited to the actual BUR thread, so I removed it.

Your example isn't quite appropriate. anthro has alternatives that are reasonably popular - like feral, taur, etc. Meanwhile, modern-era would cover about 99% of all posts on e621. Maybe, it would be better to create an umbrella tag for artwork that predates the modern era instead?
