Topic: Foreground vs background tags

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Alright, this is something that everyone has experienced at some point, that is, you are browsing posts for a given tag, but you find posts that only have said tag as a background object/character.
Let me explain it with an example, let's say you have a thing for anthro bees, so you put those tags in the search bar, only to find a non-bee anthro character, and a small, barely detailed drawing of a bee in the background.

This would be mostly for species, since objects are not the main focus of this site (unless you are into friking furniture), it would work similarly to things like "Species, General, Copyright, etc", in that it is not a tag by itself but a section of its own, to separate foreground from background.

Should be tagged as ambient_bee already, if I'm understanding correctly.

Not quite what I mean, so let me try again. Look at this pic for example
post #1940034

Sure, there are technically 3 characters, each of a different specie, and thus, should be tagged, but only one is on the foreground and the main focus of the picture, if you were looking for the tags "female pikachu/leafeon" this would show up, yet it is not what you were looking for, where I am trying to get at, rather than having, say, "female focus, male focus, anthro focus, etc" why not have a section of its own that only has the tags relevant to the character being focused.

Edit: Just like we have "Characters, meta, species, etc" We could also have a Focus/Foreground section for the given tags.

Alright. That sounds like it would be difficult to implement without having a separate tag for everything involved with it. Tags can't actually be in two categories at once.

Updated

That's close to what I've been doing.

I use tagging on my own files, and found I'm always looking for things in specific roles, because as a furry you think in terms of roles and it's the natural abstraction you make viewing pictures.

So I started doing:

canine-bottom
vulpine-bottom (this seems redundant)
feline-top
collar-bottom
leash-top

It makes a whole second set of tags and bloats stuff, so I just use these instead of canine, feline, etc., and this finally fixes my eternal search problems for good, you get what you want and where, like the Bonnie Tyler song. It's basically object-oriented tagging, like putting tags in speech bubbles and tagging the bubbles. I'm not sure how to make it better, suggestions welcome.

I thought I only needed 2 but I don't know what to call the roles in a spitroast.

I wish I didn't have to do all the work myself (so I only save a few pics once in awhile after this, I have things to do), but I'm not sure anyone else wants to do this, since defining the roles is semi-subjective and this takes nine lifetimes, so I put it here for the future for those who like it, I wasted a decade before figuring this out.

Oh yeah and the role tags are linked to a position tag. So like from_behind has -top and -bottom so the roles are defined by the position, it's like a class. It's implicit if you know what things are and you don't put stupid tags.

(p.s. I'm not a furry, I'm an aspirational therian and I'm writing this down so I can find it again in my next lifetime, thanks this helps)

I think I'm going to do it like this (edit: wait I got it), say you have 2 pairs in a picture (I don't keep dashes in tag names so it's simple):

wolf-canine-top-from_behind-1
snowleopard-feline-bottom-from_behind-1

dog-canine-top-from_behind-2
squirrel-rodent-bottom-from_behind-2

or

wolf-canine-top-from_behind-middle
snowleopard-feline-bottom-from_behind-middle

dog-canine-top-from_behind-corner
squirrel-rodent-bottom-from_behind-corner

The last tag in the name is the "instance" or like the tag for the specific speech bubble (the one before is redundant for clarity). Not sure that works on your site cause there's no space on the left, it'd have to be on the other side.

(I think I'll only use this part for pictures with more than one pose or comics)

(edit: no this sucks the tags get too long, 3 part max)
