Topic: Tag Suggestion: Type Advantage?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I'm not sure if this exists under a different name. Essentially this is a similar category as predator/prey relations. The theme of type advantage involves one character having an inherent advantage over the other due to their elemental type. For example: a water type would find it easy to dominate a fire type. This concept is particularly applicable to Pokemon and related things, but it's a common theme in many magic systems. Suffice to say, I very much like the idea of being able to search for this and see those cute fairies putting the big dragons in their place.

I am of the opinion that tagging types, or anything derived from types, is an absolutely horrible idea.

Types (as separate from existing tags like elemental_manipulation) don't really work with TWYS. For example: what part of Absol's design suggests that it's a dark-type? What features would have to change for an Absol to be tagged as a ghost-type, fighting-type, flying-type, steel-type, fairy-type, or psychic-type?

The problem I have with this is that generally when (for example) a grass-type pokemon has sex with a water-type, it's purely incidental. It's not depicted as being domination or a predator/prey type of thing. I'd be more ok with a type_effectiveness tag for when type match-ups are CLEARLY intended to be relevant to the picture. For example:

  • A fairy-type pokemon has a harem consisting entirely of dragon-types
  • A fire-type is in pain after accidentally getting urine on himself
  • A magicjob doesn't work well on a dark-type pokemon
  • A fire-type is terrified by an incoming soap bubble
