Topic: [Feature] Zombie deletion on Replaced image

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Something that was brought to my attention a bit ago is that images can suddenly disappear from my uploads list while neither being added to my deleted posts list, nor were they nuked. post #2734521 and post #2734522 both still exist, and I'm still listed as the first tag editor; because the images were directly replaced with superior versions instead of being deleted in favor of a new post, the staff member who replaced them got them added to their uploads.

I feel like it would be fair to treat this as a deleted post, as would happen if it were deleted in favor of a differently numbered post, and a "zombie" deletion show up in the original uploader's list. Uploading an inferior copy of an image is still uploading an inferior copy, after all, and this would allow original posters to still find their posts through their userpage (via the Deleted Posts link). The alternative would be to just not have the replacer take the uploader status.

The benefit of replacing posts, as opposed to just uploading a new one and flagging the old for deletion, is that it doesn't count for deleted posts. It's not unusual for an image to be uploaded with the best version available, then the artist releases a better version later on, or finding the artist on another site where they provide better versions after having uploaded their stuff from e.g. Twitter or FA. So replacing the post with no negative repercussion is better than having users reluctant to upload initial releases knowing a better one could be provided/found later and cause their upload to get deleted.

Although, it does seem wrong to stealth change the uploader. I think the original uploader should remain, as this affects the results in both the Uploads list and "Comments on my posts". Especially since currently only mods can replace images, so a user asking a mod to replace an image they uploaded will cause the upload to be taken away and given to the mod.

I'm pretty sure it's an option on the replacer form/upload thingy, as I've had posts replaced and still had them as part of my uploads. Which also counted as a deletion when the character owner requested it's removal.

Yes, I agree. It should be listed somewhere on the user's page, whether it's under the deleted posts or not.

I kind of presume that the replacements system will be opened up to the rest of the users at some point. Since there is now an approval process before the replacement gets applied, and a way to roll it back if need be.

Transferring the uploader credit is meant to incentivize users to find the best quality sources from the get go. In the future, it would also encourage people to use the replacements system instead of the old "reupload and flag the inferior for deletion" method. But it would be nice to be able to turn that thing off.

Although, even in its current state, having the post replaced is still better for the user's upload limit than having it deleted for being inferior.

It depends how it works, if a user submits a replacement request then the credit swaps to them then that's fine, but if it swaps to whoever approved it then it's a problem. It'd remove the incentive for the uploader to check for better posts later on as either way they have the credit removed. Either they find a better version later, and have the credit swapped over, or somebody else does and it gets flagged as normal. I imagine there's a few cases where people upload the best version available then a few days later the commissioner will upload the full res image to their gallery, or vice-versa.

Obviously if the credit goes to whoever made the request then it shouldn't be a problem if it gets opened to users.
