Should be an alias since traditional media includes pencil sketches

It also includes colored pencils, markers, (actual) watercolor, and cray pas, but aliasing all of them to traditional_media doesn't really do much to sort them.

If aliased, all you have to do is search traditional_media_(artwork) sketch and you're good to go

In other words, these should all be tagged with sketch?

No but they are traditional media

Actually sketch is for the presence of rough sketch lines, regardless of medium. These are all examples of sketch from various artwork mediums:

sketch sometimes gets mistagged on anything pencil_(artwork), but the sketch tag is never meant to be on images that are more polished like these:

Traditional_media_(artwork) is a tag group for very many different types of traditional art creation methods. The more specific tags for each artwork medium are very helpful though to be able to either search or blacklist artwork mediums depending on preferences. They serve a purpose, are still important and are not replicatable through any other search terms.
Implicating them makes sense though, because they are a type of traditional_media_(artwork).

Though in this case you probably wouldn't bother blacklisting it -- at about 4320 posts, less than 0.8% of all posts are traditional_media. However uploading is increasing, apparently -- ~1080 of those were posted in 2014.

I'd say it's got more to do with people being somewhat more aware of media tags.

good point, tagging has been improving overall.

I say implicate it. Some people may want to just see pencil work, or crayon work, while others want to see any and all traditional media.
