Topic: My attempts to create a tag are going horribly wrong

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I hate being the guy who asks for help on something that there's probably a disgustingly simple solution to-- but more than that, I hate being the guy who comes in and fucks shit up on a site. And since that's all I'm doing right now, I could use some help with a tag creation issue. I just don't know how things work here well enough to figure it out on my own, and the tagging guidelines page isn't telling me what I need to know.

The picture in question is https://e621.net/posts/641259 . The character's name is Siren, but whoever originally tagged the pic misspelled the name as 'seiren', which resulted in the tags mistakenly attributing the pic to two artists, lonbluewolf and seiren (it is, in fact, by lonbluewolf alone).

I removed the erroneous "seiren" tag, but I can't get "siren" to show up as a character tag. My attempts to add "siren" as a tag only added the tag to the 'species' tags. I then tried "siren_(pretty_cure)", and that got added to the general tags. I undid both of these, and as of right now, the picture stands with no indication of the character's name. I don't want to try a third time and strike out, so I'm leaving it to the experts (i.e., not me).

There may be no point in there being a specific "siren_(pretty_cure)" tag, since it will be the only pic for this character, but if someone can get "siren" to show up as a character tag on this pic, and not as a species or a general tag, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

If you're creating a new tag

  • When adding the tag to a post start it with char:, e.g. char:siren_(pretty_cure)
  • This will only work for a tag that hasn't been used before

If it's an already existing tag

  • Click the ? next to the tag on the sidebar
  • Select "Edit Tag" on the top bar of the wiki page that opens
  • Select desired tag category from drop-down list

Siren as a species refers to the Sirens of Greek and Roman mythology whose singing lured unwary sailors to their deaths. That's definitely not what you want. Using siren_(pretty_cure) is fine. You just need to switch its category to a Character tag (just follow faucet's second set of instructions).

Thanks. I didn't mention it before (because my post was wordy enough already), but I did try adding "character:siren" before coming to the forum for help. I suppose it didn't work because I used the whole word "character" instead of the abbreviation? Still, the message from the site I got when I tried that wasn't helpful-- it said something to the effect that I couldn't add a tag using a prefix. It certainly didn't guide me towards the right way to do it.

character:...

is correct, but normal users can't use it with a tag that already exists. Since siren already exists, you can't change its type that way (and since the tag is used for a species, it shouldn't be changed to a character).

So in other words, if I'd just tried to create "character:siren_(pretty_cure)", I probably would have been successful. Wish I'd thought to give that a go.

Something to note is the Precure tags are largely split between _(precure) and _(pretty_cure) suffixes at the moment and could use standardisation aliases

There's only one singular siren tag. Unlike websites where the tag type is part of the tag, the prefix will get removed, and can only be used to change the type of all existing instances of it. For this reason, they actually reduced the amount of instances were allowed to exist when doing this.
As a result:

These have become the means for doing things. Put a suffix on to differenciate it, and if you forgot to change the type early on, you can do so from the tag's wiki page.
