Topic: e621 theme: pichan

Posted under e621 Tools and Applications

hey all! crossposting here since i accidentally posted it to general.

i tried my hand at making an e621 theme and thought i'd share it here. i'm a n00b at css so please be patient/gentle with me lol. i also am not familiar with e621, so consider this a v1.0 that will likely have to be updated in the future!

you can try it here (you need the extension stylus): https://userstyles.world/style/810/pichan

let me know what you think! because my account is new i can't really view certain pages, so i can't guarantee styles will work as intended on the following pages:

  • account messages/pm's
  • post upload page
  • discord page
  • etc.

if you run into any issues lmk! hope someone enjoys! ^_^

You could simply edit the category of the post, instead of copy pasting the whole thing. ('-⠀⠀'

Well, since you double posted already, you should at least hide the other thread.

All in all, looks pretty neat.
I won't be using it, unfortunately, due to incompatibilities with the userscript I'm using. And because of some... questionable font choices.

Here is some feedback from about 30 minutes of using it, though:

  • I appreciate the more streamlined search form on pages like the tag index or the artist list. Not sure why the Search button needs to be so huge, though.
  • The "Submit" buttons on forum posts and comments are way too huge. The "Preview DText" button can be on the same line to take up less vertical space.
  • For some reason, the comments already have editing form visible by default. That is really not ideal, I don't know why you decided to have it like that.
  • Links within DText should be more obvious. As they are, they are barely visible. Here's an example: with userstyle enabled, can you tell what part of this sentence is a link at a glance?
  • For the love of god, don't remove the "Mode" dropdown. It's a very useful tool that people do actually use.
  • The post flag page is hilariously broken.
  • The links in the header only activate when you click on the text itself. They should activate when you click anywhere within the highlighted portion.
  • Same issue as above with the [section] tags: only the text is clickable when trying to collapse / show the entire thing.
  • The user profile page has... issues: https://e621.net/users/211960
  • The user feedback page should have entries colored according to the type of feedback it is: green for positive, red for negative, grey for neutral: https://e621.net/user_feedbacks

Still, I appreciate the amount of work you've put into this.

i appreciate the feedback and the tip about hiding the other post! some of these things i had no clue existed (like the flag page or that user profile page) so it helps a ton to get feedback from someone who actually uses this site, i only started like four days ago lol. would def appreciate feedback on the revision if you're able, hope to get that out soon 💪

edit: took less time than i thought?! not sure if i was able to address everything well, especially the part about section tags (i took a stab at it but not sure if i understood what was wrong TwT) but hopefully it looks/works a little better!

Updated

This looks really nice! Only issue is that it's seemingly almost completely incompatible with RE621. Would you by any chance be able to fix that, and add compatibility to the theme?

Oh hey, you did fix it! Well, most of it.
I didn't think you would take care of it that quickly either, so I didn't check back on the thread. Sorry about that.

Couple more things:
- The flag page is still a mess: https://e621.net/post_flags/new?post_flag[post_id]=204756
- The feedback page is still missing a way to differentiate between a positive, negative, and neutral records: https://e621.net/user_feedbacks
- Please, don't get rid of the rank-based username highlighting. People can turn it off manually in the settings, don't make that choice for them.
- The links on the user profile page should be obvious. They are not: https://i.imgur.com/wQu2NLX.png

- I like the user profile page layout. Especially the horizontal "Uploads" and "Favorites" thumbnails. It's definitely not because it matches my own implementation of that page: https://i.imgur.com/9ZAvIcg.png
- I do like the way the new comment / forum post is laid out now. A lot more compact than before.
- Glad to see the Mode dropdown back! No, really, it's great.

It's... complicated. I don't know if this is something that I can fix on my side.
There are a bunch of styles here that apply to all elements of the same type (ex. all menu elements, etc). And when I use one of those elements, they also get restyled, often resulting in stuff being broken.

The biggest issue is the header, of course. RE621 pretty much recreates the header from scratch to allow it to be customizable.
It still uses the old elements to maintain a degree of compatibility with other scripts and styles (ex. e621 configurator and such), but if the header gets restyled as radically as it is here, the whole thing just breaks apart.

There are also even stranger issues. For example, this userstyle somehow completely breaks the FontAwesome icons the site natively uses.
I have absolutely no clue how or why that happened, but as a result all icons in my script show up as blank squares.

This seems quite nice so far!
Finally something easy on the eyes.

Would be nice if you added the selector for e9 to the style.

Also, I am not sure if I can say I like the font. do we have options?

Otherwise, impressive work!
