Topic: So uh...I don't know how to tag Pixiv artists-

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I'm still somewhat new to tagging stuff on here but, my only struggle is tagging artists from Pixiv, mainly because most of the artists' names are Japanese or another language. (泯灭之日 <- like this artist) And knowing that there's some characters that aren't in the 'ASCII text', and that Google Translate isn't exactly the brightest translator I kinda tend to struggle when tagging these.

When the artist does not have a Twitter/Pawoo or other alternative site, you can romanize their name with Google Translate. Keep in mind that romanization is not the same as translation.

For example, 泯灭之日 can be translated as "The Day of Annihilation", but its romanization is "Mǐnmiè Zhī Rì". Since diacritics are not ASCII, just discard them.

泯灭之日 -> minmie_zhi_ri

If all you have is their Pixiv name, I'd first try to search it here normally, in case it happens to be an artist that got their tag before the non-ASCII ban (or has an alias set up already). If that turns up nothing, I would then go to the Artists list and search there, in case they have an artist entry with that name listed as a secondary name. If that still turns up nothing, and you can't find a Twitter name or anything, I'd then just fall back to tagging untaggable_artist and put something like "Artist: 泯灭之日" in the description, letting someone who's a native speaker or fluent enough to handle it.

I would avoid using a translator like Google because they're not really designed for names. You don't typically want to translate a foreign person's name into English, and Kanji may be read differently when used as a name compared to normal speech (to say nothing of when it's ambiguous if it's Chinese or Japanese).

In Pixiv's case, they do have ID numbers. In the case of the artist you linked, the url ends with 10488327 so it would be pixiv_id_10488327. Not the prettiest artist tag, but it's one that people can search for when they don't know how to transliterate the kanji.

I just copy/paste the dang Japanese name, ain't my fault people can't speak Japanese and someone who cares enough will do that part of the work for me.
In this e621 NEST, WE ALL SHARE THE TAGGING BURDENS.
