Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: twintails_(hairstyle) -> pigtails

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #54540 twintails_(hairstyle) -> pigtails has been rejected.

Reason: From the wiki:
Twintails: A female hairstyle that has 2 ponytails on each side of the hair.
Pigtails: [...] used when a character has their hair bunched like a ponytail on both sides of their head.

EDIT: The tag alias twintails_(hairstyle) -> pigtails (forum #317734) has been rejected by @NotMeNotYou.

I don’t think the wiki is correct here. Pigtails and twintails are similar, sure, but pigtails are traditionally quite short. Twintails are longer, like an actual full-length ponytail or even longer (although I don’t know if there is a different name for short ponytails… there might be). See tohru_(dragon_maid) for an example of that.

I don't think there's a meaningful difference, especially not one which can be defined and tagged consistently. Pigtails don't have to be short.

If that’s the case, shouldn’t the alias be reversed? The name pigtails implies that they’re short (ever seen a pig’s tail?) At least twintails does not imply any specific length.

Hmm, so twintails would be for something like post #2837163 while pigtails would be for something more like post #1756164?

I’m not entirely sure that the second one is a pigtail… it might be, but the way it fans out a little different. The “traditional” pigtail I’m familiar with is like what you usually see on muffet.

(To make things more confusing, some definitions of pigtail require that they are braided, while the short unbraided ones I’m talking about are sometimes called “bunches” instead)

Wikipedia also states that they should be braided.

Wikipedia also states that the little, unbraided "bunches" versions you or I think of as pigtails also count.

As with many things in life, different locales use different names for similar or overlapping concepts. The question is: should we include every different hairstyle called “pigtails” in the same tag? Long, short, braided or unbraided? I don’t think that’s ideal.

Note: Wikipedia also has a separate page for bunches

Also, from the pigtails Wikipedia page: In the context of hairstyles, the usage of the term pigtail (or twin tail or twintail) shows considerable variation.
“Considerable variation” is not really ideal when it comes to tagging.

Updated

They often carry different connotation but I think they are synonymous, theres already a bunch of things tagged pigtail that would typically be more described as twintail

So now that these two are officially distinct, HOW are they distinct, exactly?

I'm not against the decision of separating them at all, but the wiki page of both twintails_(hairstyle) and pigtails fail to make any distinction between the two still.
I imagine it's a matter of length?

twintails_(disambiguation) would also need to be updated once the distinction is made clear.

It's the mass auto rejection for aliases and implications from and before 2021, it isn't deciding it either way.

You know, the process has been going on for so long that I completely forgot it was happening, I look silly now. Should've known having an actual advancement was too good to be true
