Topic: Tag Alias: animated_png -> apng

I'd rather alias it to "animated". There's no point in having a file-specifing tag like "animated_png" tag when you can use "animated type:png"

I think the alias should be the other way around (despite official names). It's more obvious of a tag for people using unsupported browsers since they will be right next to each other on the list (and more obvious for blacklisting as well).

While this may be correct, unlike GIF the only browsers that officially support it are Firefox and Safari, which represent approximately 30% of traffic.* Having an animated PNG tag gives a fallback when the other 70% (understandably) remove the animated tag.

*30% of traffic based on mass traffic estimates. However, I wouldn't be surprised if an abnormally high amount of people here used Firefox, (given the nature of the site).

Normally, I'd agree we don't need it when we can search by file type. However, animated pngs are a little bit of a unique situation.

For one thing, animated pngs on this site aren't listed as "apng". They're listed as "png". So the rare few that are animated are mixed in with the huge pile of ones that aren't animated at all. And yes you can search type:png animated but only for those which have the animated tag still on them. However, many browsers do not support the animation and display it as a still image which confuses whether or not it's "animated". If it also has animated_png as a tag on it, then that helps reduce the confusion of "why does this have the animated tag? nothing's moving so I'm gonna remove it" that a lot of people are going to do. And it's a reasonable reaction. I personally can't get them to move unless I load them in Firefox AND I use the 'download' link under the image to then load just the image in its own window, otherwise even firefox displays it as a still image. But I need to know when there's a reason to go to all that extra work. Without an animated_png or similar tag letting me know, I'd probably have no idea if I'm looking at a png that has animated properties because it's not something that will load automatically. The support for the format is just that terrible. But when people see an apparently 'still' image, and then remove the animated tag, that makes it impossible to search for the png's which are animated via the type_png animated search.

So having a tag for animated_png helps communicate that it has animated aspects even if most people lack a way to view it as animated. And it makes it searchable for those who want to find them. So I'm going to approve it. But, I'm going to flip it around because of the reasons Parasprite listed, (being placed right next to the animated tag in the list of tags on an image, and making it clearer what it's for to people who may not know it by its abbreviated official name). So, approving alias of apng to --> animated_png.
