Topic: Ban certain words before registering

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

I've been seeing a lot of banned users in the Ban List having questionable and/or names and being labeled off as "Trolls". I get the feeling that some are trolls, while others are spambots.

I feel like with the illusion that this booru has so many users, and with such a waste of database banning these users, why not ban these names and their variations before they register? Like "(Such and such name) is not allowed."

...because they can use other names/words to get around it? Banning a given word won't magically make them disappear, you know.

Why not let them use these words? If they're going to make their intentions so obvious from the get go, it'll make it easier for the admins to know to keep an eye on them.

But if they banned words from usernames how could you use the username FuckKnotty_HesHot, that's a good name.

Given the OP brought up the ban list and is referring to those banned for being a troll, almost all of them are using some variation of the N word. There was also a massive purge a while back of usernames with the N word, which they did knowing it would catch some legitimate non-trolls. So I don't think they're talking about generic "bad words"/profanity, just certain specific words that are already grounds for the account to be banned.

Though the aforementioned Tom Scott video alludes to the challenge such word filters have. And when people can easily distort words to make it difficult for a computer to recognize what the word is intended to be while it's still apparent to some human readers, using a word filter turns it into a game of whack-a-mole with some innocent users and innocent words caught in the crossfire.

I never really understood why folks do that. For attention? For the lolz? Just because they can? Are they insecure? Were they just bored? Do they need to vent after getting a parking ticket? Were they frustrated that they couldn’t get to the center of a tootsie-pop? Did they have a bad experience at a new restaurant that just opened in town? Do they need a hug and some Taco Bell?

The world may never know

They're mentally middeschoolers and think that annoying someone is the same as having power over them and being their social superior.

In that case, I think I know the perfect solution to OP's problem

Had that been made in 2007, that would have solved out problems!

I did not realize about the Scunthorpe problem after I made this thread. That is a problem, but it probably sure cuts the hassle for banning every user who blatantly uses the n-word and/or the three letter f-word, while the rest can be manually dealt with.

The other problem is that we don't know if the users using the n-word are really people of color or not...

To be fair, most people saying "Fag" nowadays aren't doing so with the intention of offense. It's become more of a joke than an insult at this point.

Hell, there's a reason I call myself a "writefag".

I've seen plenty of people use furfag for years in a jovial/inoffensive manner. Sometimes even proudly proclaiming to be one.
