Topic: Tagging vehicles

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Random wandering has taken me by several different tagging standards for vehicles (in this particular case aircraft).

Most aircraft are tagged by their common name or designation (or both), but some get more specific about particular versions, and a small handful of them are prefixed by the manufacturer as well as their designation (f'rex hawker_hurricane, presumably to differentiate the WW2 fighter from the weather).

Is there one standard that all tags should meet, or is it just "eh, whatever" thanks to the need for such tags being rather minimal?

Yes, I understand that, but maybe there should be some kind of standard. For example there are spitfire_mk_ix tags, but no matter how accurate the artist draws them most people will neither notice the difference between the Marks nor care about them. Until I started working on it last night, as far as I could tell there was no generic "Spitfire" tag to cover the general platform (where the visual differences are minimal, primarily in weapon barrels visible outside the wing, the propeller blade count, or subtle changes to accommodate differing internal hardware).

There's also the issue I mentioned about whether the tags should include the manufacturer as standard tagging procedure. Most of the tagged aircraft I've come across don't include the manufacturer, but it's not universal... and I think it should be, but I'm not so arrogant as to assume my say on the matter is Law[tm].
