Topic: Would be cool if we had achievements

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Have been thinking about how cool would be if e6 had achievements like
"wow you made 100 posts"
or something like that
i know some users (myself included)
add those thing to their profile just to show off that they have achieved something
anyways thoughts about it?

Trying to show off one's status has been considered a bad thing in the past.

For example, the uploader's name has been removed from the posts page ever since the move from Beta.
While it served a technical purpose to see whom had uploaded the post, it was removed to solve a "social problem" as I was told.
One of the main reason was that people were competing to have their names "featured" next to posts by mass uploading artworks from popular artists with very minimal tagging, boosting their stats up and using it as a status symbol, completely undermining people who put more effort into it.

I quite like how Wikipedia handles user awards. It's just users giving awards to other users whenever they think it's appropriate. This does mean you can give awards to yourself, or awards for doing nothing in particular. But they run on an honour system and it works. It's also needlessly complicated and Kafkaesque. Given e621 can feel Kafkaesque at times, that's maybe why it came to mind. But I'd really not recommend using it here.

Still, you can do this without any complicated award categorisation. By saying "thanks" when you notice some user doing good work. I always like to thank translators here when they translate something I wanted to read.

in my opinion translators are the chad of the chads
i also have done something alike in a while ago thanking an user for upload most of the art of an certain artist

Isn't that just the feedback system here? Only usable by admins, but they can give out positive feedback.

Yep, the world is unfair like that. You can take the extra initiative, check with the artist and character owners for permission before reposting (and safeguarding it from being taken down due to the lack thereof) and then come back to see that the post had been uploaded anyways by somebody who probably didn't bother to go through the entire process in the first place.

i do that because it's nice asking for permission
plus i can be friends with the artist later on
yo my pfp is from an artist who i helped with posting and tagging
didn't even expected but makes me and the artist happy ๐Ÿค

This immidiately brought to my mind how there used to be listings of people who have made most amount of posts on the website and now the person doing the most uploads is permabanned for doing a lot of malicious things just to keep that title.
Also like Wolfgang said, another one is how we have now hidden uploaders from post pages for several reasons, one being how we have users who try to snipe brand new uploads from highly praised and liked artists, just so their name could show up on posts with high number of upvotes and favorites.

I do like the notion of giving some sort of encouragement and benefit for people who do actually help here and for them to be able to show it to others, but at the same time the history has shown it to be kinda toxic. I also really hate the janitor name on my profile, because people will immidiately act differendly towards me when they shouldn't.

yeah people like to be the highest for some reason to show that they are "better" or "superior" or something alike
but i like this achievements just for cosmetic to fill that blank space in the home page because why not

this thing of acting different with you just because of janitor must be something of like
"oh you are superior than me" and probs that type of shit
also don't hate the janitor on your profile
you earned it because you deserve it, so be happy for that

I'd like achievements.
It'd be like what Derpibooru does.
Except there's kinda makes no sense and is all over the place.

I'd figure E621 would actually make some decent achievements that aren't as
wonky as Derpibooru's
