Topic: Tag Alias: digital_media_(artwork) -> digital_media

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Actually it's part of a system of tags for tagging the media used to make the image vs the supplies. Most of them have *_(artwork) suffix, both for consistency and to differentiate them in cases like marker, pencil, etc which otherwise get mixed with tagging the object vs tagging the media used to make the artwork, which are distinctly different types of things. Aliasing digital_media and digital_media_(artwork) would make sense because they're the same thing, but I'd actually go with doing it the other way around just so that it keeps it consistent with the other tags for tagging the artwork medium, AND because it makes the shorter "digital_media" a shortcut version for quicker typing. So it seems like flipping this would add more value while achieving the same result. /two cents

Not that it matters, but is there any reason why traditional_media isn't treated the same way?

As far as I know, it's just because no ones suggested doing it (yet). It's not a bad idea though for the sake of consistency.

Looking it over, I just remembered another reason why it's good to have both traditional_media and digital_media_(artwork) as valid tags. It's because mixed_media is a very common method in making artwork. Which means that just because it has traditional_media in it doesn't mean it doesn't also have digital_media_(artwork) in it as well. And just because it has mixed_media doesn't mean it includes both digital and traditional in it. So it would just make it harder to tag those accurately if we only had tags for half of it. And the commonality of mixed media in artwork throws off the ability to simply "minus search" for the other one with accuracy. Since people can feel very strongly about what media combinations they want to be looking at, being able to blacklist or specify their preferred combinations when searching is generally useful.

That makes sense. I probably should have inferred this since I spend so much time looking for conflicting tags (solo ~duo ~group, solo male female, etc).

Let's do this.

Edit: Nice job on the wiki, particularly the traditional media one.

Thanks. =)

And I flipped this and approved it as discussed. I also fixed the only two lacking the suffix so the ability to wildcard search this set of tags should be more complete now. And this set of tags on the whole should be more consistent now.
