Most of those tags can exist without the existence of an actual police person.

Hard to say. He's not calling police a police person, he's calling it as an umbrella tag. I feel like it could be better worded to avoid people only putting it on instead of police_officer though.

in any case it seems police needs a description rewrite or an alias to police_officer - though it seems reception is mixed/negative on the latter option judging from the previous forum post

Yeah, people may not want to see any police-related stuff, and an umbrella tag for police would be an easy way to blacklist it.

Makes sense, but I got an earful when I used this reasoning for my BUR proposal expanding the use of the rape tag, so who knows if that will work.

That’s because, if I recall correctly, you were suggesting to imply things that are not rape to the rape tag. I understand the motivation, but it still has to make logical sense or it’ll be rejected.

In that case, I think a clearer tag is needed for police-related paraphernalia. To me, "police" is synonymous with "police officer(s)", and if a picture has one or more police officers, I'd be more likely to just tag it "police".

I feel like this is the most straightforward option given that people don't seem to want to alias police_officer to police

police_paraphernalia seems good enough. Could start up a trend of _paraphernalia umbrella tags for other concepts as well.
