(not sure what this falls under)
I know pixiv and pximg are whitelisted, but trying to link any pic to upload only gives a "Not found". I can't see it.

Do I go ahead and upload, hope it gets "found"? Do I have to save it elsewhere as a file first?
What if anything am I doing wrong, for future reference?
That doesn't look like the full size image link. I don't know if that's what's causing the issue, but I'd suggest trying to get the full-size/original image link Kemonophonic gave instead of a resized one.

Edit2: is it the file type that's the issue? I see when someone links pximg as a source in a picture, the link gives a 403

I get the same issue with uploading from Pixiv. I'm guessing Pixiv doesn't allow direct hotlinks to images from offsite (I get a 403 Forbidden error when I click on the above links), but it only effects some browsers? Uploading from the link still works though, it's just the preview that doesn't appear.

Pixiv prevents hotlinking, which is why the image doesn't appear in the uploader and gives a 403 when opening manually in the browser. Uploading from pixiv is special cased in the server code to function at all, but this is not something that can be done in the browser, so pixiv previews will continue to be broken until the foreseeable future.
The "Not found" image (which was ironically missing itself before) was actually added rather recently and shows up when the preview encounters errors of any kind, including 403. I admit that it is rather confusing in this case, I'll probably make it so it only shows up when the server responds with an actual 404 and show another message for other response codes.
While you're here, is there anything that can be done to get Twitter previews to work? They've always been broken, despite that site allowing hotlinks.
Not sure what you mean, twitter previews work fine for me. I can't remember ever having trouble with them.

Yeah Twitter previews work fine for me too, only issue is this weird message: "The direct URL entered has the following problem: Sample URL" I don't know what the hell that means but the image shows up just fine.

that means that you're trying to use the sample size url instead of the full size url

replace small at the end of the url of an image with orig and you should be fine.

It just shows the new placeholder image. Before that was added, it showed the standard Firefox "broken image" icon. This has been the case for as long as I've been uploading from there, since before the revamp.
The actual upload works perfectly fine.
Tumblr, FurAffinity and InkBunny don't have this problem, it's specifically a Twitter (and I guess Pixiv) thing.

That apparently happens with "large" too but I have extensions that give me the "original" size so I'm usually good on that front. Thanks for the explanation.

Might help to see what the URL is and how you're getting to it.

Every URL, no exceptions. It's the same format as the "original URL" Versperus showed you above. It also happened back before Twitter changed the URL format to the current one (the URLs used to end in :orig instead), and before the automated check was added to e621 I uploaded some pictures in :large which also failed.
As I said, it doesn't actually stop me from uploading so I don't worry about it too much.
