Topic: Confused about voting vs. favorites

Posted under Art Talk

What's the point of favoriting something without upvoting it? Maybe this is just my insecurity talking again, but if you like something to favorite it but not enough to upvote it, it just gives a mixed message, and sometimes results in pictures with a high fav count also having a zero or negative score. That's just something I've always been confused about.

I suggest three causes for that:
Option 1: People are lazy and don't bother doing both. Favorites let you find stuff again, but upvotes have no tangible benefit to the person voting.
Option 2: People are more liberal with favorites than with votes. In my ideal world, people would vote based on the (perceived) artistic quality of the image, and favorite if they like it. I have downvoted images that I favorited (post #2302890 is good, but not ~700 points good) and upvoted images that I would never favorite (gore etc: post #3065977 post #2935462).
Option 3: You are misinterpreting the results. It's not that people aren't upvoting; they just downvote as often as they upvote. Favorites can only go up, and (especially for niche fetishes) downvotes can minimize the effect of upvotes.

I suspect it's a combination of option 1 and 3. People in option 2 seem pretty rare.

Wish there was vote up and down count visible under the post along with a bar that would show vote up/down ratio (just like the youtube used to have with likes and dislikes). Total score not always reflect the actual popularity and reception of the post. Look at post #2508050 for example. Its score is only 4 but you don't see that it actually has 590 upvotes and 586 downvotes!

honestly, I forget we even have votes for images sometimes.

But yeah, Matrix is right. Favourites (and sets) lets me find stuff again. Only reason I use them. It's not particularly meant to be an "I like this" button like upvotes are.

Hrng. Maybe I'm just nervous because, while most of my uploads get a few favorites, pics with a negative score on this site are so exceptionally rare that I can't help but feel like I'm outright pissing people off when one of my submissions passes that threshold, favcount be damned.

(It's just my anxiety talking, it's just my anxiety talking, it's just my anxiety talking...)

You can search your upvotes too, though.
votedup:anytext
(and downvotes)
voteddown:anytext

at least with upvotes i don't have to stare at all the art i upvoted every time i look at my profile, nor can strangers do the same if they're nosy, unlike favourites

i don't like that's how it works on youtube, and i don't like that's how it works on twitter, even if i can private those i still know there's a list of all the things i liked/hearted and that gives me an impulse to curate that list and it just make me more picky with my likes/hearts. here i can just mindlessly upvote every decent piece of ass i come across and forget about it while still appeasing the algorithm (or hot/popular tabs, not as complex an algorithm i guess) win/win

oh, and i guess i agree with op that it'd be kinda silly to fave some art you haven't upvoted. maybe favouriting can also auto-like?

For a long time, I didn't realize that +fav was not the same as upvoting a post. And even now when I know upvoting needs to be done separately, I rarely go through the effort, since it has no benefit for the individual user vs adding a post to your faves. I think it would make sense to automatically upvote posts that a user faves, or at least, make that the default functionality with an option to turn it off for people who care to make a distinction between upvotes and faves.

You can see the up- and downvote counts. Just hover over the score.

I know (that's why I knew how many ups and downs that post had). But it's so hidden that very few users know it exists. And mobile users can't use it at all since a mouse cursor is needed to see it.

This, this a thousand times this!! Even if the default is to have it turned off, I really would like an option where every post I favorite automatically gets upvoted as well.
