Topic: The Problem With Painting_(Artwork)

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

The painting_(artwork) tag is constantly misunderstood and misapplied, it's regularly tagged on digitally created images, as well as some posts featuring "a painting" (painting_(object)).

The posts under painting_(artwork)should be updated to traditional_painting_(artwork), and any leftover digital paintings should be retagged. painting_(artwork) should at least be disambiguated, but is probably better off re-categorized under Invalid.

I don't know if this can be done in a single BUR, but (I think) the steps would be:

update painting_(artwork) -> traditional_painting_(artwork)
imply traditional_painting_(artwork) -> traditional_media_(artwork)
category painting_(artwork) -> invalid

Digital painting is still painting, so maybe painting_(artwork) should be used as a sort of umbrella for both digital_painting_(artwork) and traditional_painting_(artwork)?

I see where you're coming from, but it may not be that useful of a tag. painting_(artwork) - which is at least intended to cover traditional painting (but needs some major pruning to remove non-traditional work), only has 4.9k posts, compare with digital_painting_(artwork)'s 8.6k (which is clearly undertagged, but also needs pruning itself for non-paintings). A redefined painting_(artwork) tag would likely just end up being mostly digital art, rather than a worthwhile umbrella tag, at least in my opinion.
