The tag alias #57875 bike_shorts -> spandex_shorts has been approved.

Reason: They're the same thing, but "spandex shorts" is the better tag name because it:

• literally describes what they are, just by name
• doesn't imply that they're only worn while cycling (the vast majority of posts tagged bike_shorts don't involve cycling)
• doesn't allow for potential misunderstanding that a character wearing any other type of shorts while riding a bike is wearing "bike shorts"

Some spandex shorts are likely mistagged as "gym shorts" because of the "false specificity" of bike shorts.

I would alias spandex_shorts -> compression_shorts , it seems more accurate to TWYS (we can see compression, but not necessarily that spandex causes it, as opposed to another fabric blend)
In general, I'm not sure we can determine what is spandex versus another fabric blend

Whether we know the exact material is irrelevant, the same way we don't worry whether a character in a shiny, black jacket is actually wearing leather, pleather, or PVC, we just tag "leather jacket". Compression shorts and bike shorts both notably use spandex as material, and are often referred to as "spandex shorts" regardless of whether they're pure spandex or a spandex-nylon blend.

Kora viridian also brought up the minor differences in construction (pads) in bike shorts that differentiate them from compression shorts. It may not be a difference worth making an entire tag for, but it makes "spandex shorts" an umbrella tag for two very similar, but slightly different, styles of shorts.
