Is there a way to block everything in a category except a tag? Like if I want to block all artists except x, or block all species except x. This could make searching a whole lot easier with only having to use one -tag rather than several -tags.

If I understand you correctly, you can kinda do this with the count search tokens. For example, artist_x arttags:1 will only show posts where artist_x is the only tagged artist. The problem is that this will also exclude sound_warning, and maybe other special not-really-artist artist tags that I'm forgetting. (edit: oh duh avoid_posting, conditional_dnp)

You can do the same thing with species_x spectags:1 but you'll need to know how many implications come with species x... for example, panda_german_shepherd comes with a total of 9 species tags (panda_german_shepherd spectags:9).

'block all artists except x' is practically the same as just adding 'x arttags:1' to the search terms, since only 3% of posts lack an artist tag.
'block all species except x' is similar (only 4% of posts lack species tagging)
