Topic: Headgear vs headwear

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Is there a difference between 'headgear' and 'headwear' in terms of tagging? I'd assume so since they're two separate tags in the index, but I'm not entirely clear what that distinction is.

What's considered 'headgear' and what's considered 'headwear'? Or are they pretty much the same thing?

I see what you mean. It looks like the wiki for headgear has gotten less clear over time. Also at some point, they've been implicated together, so that further mixes them.

The original distinction was:
headwear = clothing type items on the head. Like hats, bonnets, turbans, veils, underwear on head, pants on head, hoods, headscarves, headkerchiefs, etc.
headgear = non-clothing type stuff on head. Like various helmets, armor, headsets, headphones/earphones, ceremonial headdresses, etc.

So then headwear could implicate clothing.
And then headgear could handle the other types of stuff that you wear on your head/face but wouldn't really fit under clothing.

If you search headgear -headwear (searching just headgear by removing all of the implicated headwear) then you can still mostly see that distinction, because most of the hats/clothing gets filtered out and you're left with more of the helmets, armor and other not-really-clothing types of gear that you can wear on your head.

The wiki for headgear could definitely be more helpful though.

Yay necroposting!

Back in October 2022, after the discussion above, I edited the wiki pages for both headwear and headgear.

The headwear page has since been edited to include more examples of headwear, which I think is OK.

The way I left the headgear page was this , but it has since been edited to this (see the diff for the exact changes.)

The new headgear page says that clothing can also be headgear, and links to examples that I think qualify as clothing. This is different than the definitions furrypickle mentioned above.

Since there seems to be a difference of opinion, I figured I'd bring it up here for discussion before doing any further wiki editing.

You didn't need to, necro this. this wiki page doesn't belong to one random user, others are perfectly within their rights to modify it if the page is incorrect. If that folk reverts my change they get reported
