Topic: trying to update blacklist yields "Email already taken" message with no update to blacklist

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

title. i try to add lines to my blacklist and click the submit button at the bottom of the page and when it refreshes, it gives the above notice and the blacklist is missing the lines i added to the existing 12 or so lines. any idea what's going on?

before anyone mentions it, i signed out, closed and reopened my browser, and signed back in again.

You have somehow managed to create two accounts with the same email address.
I'm not sure why it was possible – it sure isn't now. But you should long in to your other account, and either change the email address there or delete the account entirely.

I.... dont think the other account is even mine. i only ever tried to sign up once. I dont even know what the other login username is. i dont suppose i could get the admin team to remove it?

Thanks, i've fixed the issue. thankfully the system chose the strange account and not the one i actually use when i requested the password (since it asks for email)
certainly a very strange issue!

I believe it should send you two emails: one for your current, and one for the alternate account.

FWIW, at one point the site didn't require an email to make an account. And when they did add an email requirement later, it didn't matter if multiple accounts used the same email.

That last part could have gotten more strict on the account creation end awhile ago, but updating your settings only started to enforce it midway through this year. Which is why there's been this sudden trend of reports about this as a 'bug'/broken in the last few months, as people run into the settings/blacklist now not wanting to save due to this conflict. So I'd guess that something probably got tightened up in the code to make it more consistent a few months ago. And that all of these reports would be from accounts that were created when the email requirements were less strict, which made having multiple accounts using the same email address possible.

Also, I think the reset email might be a single email with the info shown in a list, like: account 1, info paragraph about resetting, reset link, account 2, info paragraph about resetting, reset link. So if the one they needed was listed first, then someone might not notice that the second one was also listed right under it. It did show a reset link for each account linked to that email though, if I'm remembering right.
