Topic: Have a picture you want edited?

Posted under Art Talk

I am fairly competent with Photoshop, and often edit pictures I find that I like that have one or two things with them that I dislike so I can save them to use later for "science." I typically edit things out, but I have enough skill to add or modify some things too. If you have any requests feel free to send them to me or post here. Keep them limited to pictures on e621. If you have an account on Gelbooru, my account name over there is also MadameCrim and you can request edits to any pictures on Gelbooru.

This is a free "service," so I'm going to do them on my own time and will likely pass up any requests that are really against my interests. Thanks!

y eah editing someone's art without the artist's permission is really shitty thing to do

Updated by anonymous

I have free time again, so please send me any requests!

@Mutisija: I disagree. I'm an artist myself and I would be fine if people edited my pictures as long as they were still crediting me with the original work (as I would always do). Especially when it comes to porn, some people just have different tastes and like an image a lot except for one small detail or two, which I can help change. Notice I didn't say "fix," only edit or change, because there's nothing wrong with the original work. I'm only making an edited piece that's different to meet someones tastes or needs.

It can be quite the hassle, i don't know what most artists use as their copyright license, but i have seen some people using the "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0" license on their works, and that kinda just kills any possibilities of any edits.

I think researching single artists for their copyright licenses just to get an edit would be too much, i guess you could always ask the artist itself?

Just because you disagree, doesn't make it any less shitty thing to do.
It's just one step away from art theft, and most artists don't appreciate it if someone messes with their fursonas without asking first. Same goes for commissions and any other art that people have paid for.

Editing someone's work without permission is often viewed as "your art (or character) sucks, I'll show how to fix it", and it's one of the reasons why the dnp list is as long as it is.

Make it hilarious.

I don't care how, if it passes quality standards I'll use it as an avatar for a month.

Do your worst.

But I agree with the others, many artists are very possessive and protective about their creations.
Heck, melon (the artist of the image above) normally doesn't like edits to her stuff, but I specifically requested that template for shenanigans.

If you don't like doing the above add dicks to post #543434, all of them.
Dude said I could do anything I wanted to it, so he'll have to live with that.

Uhm, that's exactly why I make edits: to show what can be improved. Such edits would be posted as part of a thread where the artist is asking for critique, so it is different from 'cause X is/isn't my fetish' edits, but no, edits are not a blanket 'shitty thing to do'; they can be extremely informative and helpful.

Perfect edit formula:
1. Find any picture.
2. Add a penis.

just because you would be personally okay with it doesnt mean that all artists are. i am an artist and i would be furious if i found out that someone had edited my art without asking permission. but with permission it could be okay.

I agree that edits without permission are not cool.

I'm an artsy fartsy type too, but I fall the middle ground, where I don't really care that much if someone were to make an edit of my stuff, as long add they're still crediting me in their description or whatever, and the edit isn't offensive (ie, making one of my characters say racist things or something stupid like that)

But I'd much rather be asked FIRST rather than find out after the fact, especially if it's an edit I find distasteful. In general, even if I'm more laid back then others, I think permission should be obtained first.

What we have learned today kids:

Commission/Requests forum posts are never taken seriously on this forum and will always be trolled.

Like that one guy with the Res pics.

Or the one guy who was told to draw a shark with a fluffy penis.

Never taken seriously.

Yo, hey, edits are fine and all, but like a bunch of other people said, it's generally a good idea to ask, first. If I ever wind up posting art (Unlikely, it takes me a few weeks just to churn out one good image, in a good month), I'd prefer to be asked so that I know it's coming. Otherwise, I'd just report the result for theft, y'know?

Then that's their own fault for being so over sensitive about that. Now, people editing like crap or being completely disrespectful by not linking to the original artwork/artist or even claiming that he did it himself (basically art thief) are different cases, but simply editing a picture has nothing to do with how much it sucks. Everyone is different and of course everyone would like to add/change one detail or two, that's about it. Artists should not even care about those and instead take that positively, as "Hey that one dude really liked my picture so much he took his time to edit it" but of course everyone's default position is on the negative side

I see your point, but try to look at it from the original creator's perspective too. I agree that your scenario happens sometimes, but this is how it often comes off to content creators.

1. Someone is getting tons of popularity/attention for making a small change to something you spent hours on, and I get shat on in the comments.
2. It seems as though people like this edit more than my original work.
3. This person didn't ask to edit my work, which is (debatably) copyright infringement.
4. This is my personal character, who I have a very specific view of, and this guy added a dick to it.

These are mainly petty things, but I hope you can see why they would be disheartening to an artist nonetheless. That's why I think edits should be handled with care, or else you run the risk of driving the artist off and getting nothing but a "Fuck this, I'm not drawing shit for anyone anymore." kind of response. No one would win in that situation.

It's not being overly sensitive, it just relates to differing opinions. Saying it's the artist's fault is non-productive and really misses the point. It's still courteous to ask permission first.

Edit: Tokaido put it better than I did.

simply editing a picture has nothing to do with how much it sucks.

Completely agree with this though. I've seen things like "looks great but [symbol] is on backwards" and "the hair is transparent here for some reason when it should really cover the eye and it was just bugging the crap out of me". There's also the NSFW edits which are definitely complementing the artist in some way (usually) even if they prefer it to not exist.

how about just shut it and stop shaming artists who do not want their art screwed up. if an artist says that they dont want their art edited, then you accept it. its the artist who has spent hours or days or weeks or months or even years to create the drawing and viewers should be damn thankful that the the artist chose to share their art with them. have some respect and ask for the damn permission to edit.

i dont want my art edited because 90% of my work is extremely personal and it would a hurt me to see people fuck up the meaning of my drawing just for sake of their personal preferences without even asking first. but if the editor asks for permission at first and explains me what they are gonna do, i might even accept.

Hey hey chill out dude, I'm still far away from your stuff so oh please don't point the gun at me. Yeah of course if the artist publicly states they don't want their stuff to be edited because I don't know, insecurity and such, then yeah I don't upload it. Again if you are so scared of edits, add a wonderful bar on the bottom stating DO NOT MODIFY or something like that. Also no thanks, I am not going to bother 9001 artists per day and annoy them with that stupid question they will probably end up ignoring anyway because I don't feel the need to be asking them if I can do that because I don't see this as a lack of respect to the artist at all.

If your art is that personal and important to you and you are so scared of negativity, then why the hell are you posting them publicly in the first place ? That's like, I don't know, scanning my diary, post it on a blog then whine because people are commenting and laughing at me

no. it looks fucking hideous. i dont want to ruin my drawings just because there are dickheads on internet who dont bother to ask permission before editing art :/

its common courtesy to ask artist's permission to edit art if you are going to post it somewhere! artist wont most likely ignore such questions. for artist getting a simple question about permissions is far less annoying than finding out later that their art got edited without permission. its not that hard to just go to artist's gallery and send them a simple question: "is it okay if i edit your drawing and then i post it here with credits and all?" if you dont receive a reply, consider it as "no, its not okay" reply.

i post it because on internet because i want people to see it. but the fact that i consent to share my art with others doesnt automatically mean that its freely available for editing

Can I add googly eyes and blip you the result for comedic purposes whenever I feel it is necessary to add googly eyes?
(Will only be uploaded to private drive.google account, without public indexing, and then deleted after the joke has run its course)

Just wanna say that artists are people too. I've actually tried reaching out to a few "popufurs" and have found them pretty chill. Send a note their way some time asking about an edit, I bet you'll get a response. If you have a cool idea and can provide passable previous edit work, they'll probably say yes. Protip: If you send a message, don't make your subject "hey." Goddamn everyone starts their message with "hey."

Also, doesn't everyone hate watermarks, distracting signatures, and "do not edit" signs on art? I know I do. Why would you ever advocate their use? щ(ಠ益ಠщ)

I tried asking if I could use somebody's art as a reference, once. I got an answer within a few minutes, and it was a resounding NO!.
Another time, I asked if I could render some traditional media into digital. While I didn't get answered for a couple of days, I didn't let that bother me, and continued on with things. Eventually, I got a response, Apathetic yes.

There's plenty of stuff you can do while you wait on an answer, so go ahead and take the time to ask, and put time into your edits when you do get to them.
