Previously it was possible to use twitter as a source for images, but now it is not? I have not been able to find anything on the site that gave a reason for why it was removed from the whitelist.

It is still whitelisted. Make sure the link you have inserted is the correct format.
Make sure there is written "orig" instead of "medium/small/500x500/900x900/etc." in the end of the URL.
