not necessarily; two characters in the foreground and one in the distant background don't make a group

Actually no. Socially "group" can mean either 1, a bunch of people or 2, a bunch of people who are spending time together.
But for the purposes of our character # tags, the group tag applies whenever the total number of characters is three or more. Just like duo applies when the total number of characters is two, even if they're not interacting or 'together' in any way. And solo applies when the total number of characters is just one.
We used to have trio once upon a time, but that was aliased away ages ago for some reason.

That is exactly where you would use the duo_focus tag. There are 3 characters (a group), but only 2 of them are the focus of the post. As far as I understand it, technically speaking solo_focus/duo_focus shouldn't be used without duo/group.

Also this. We must have been typing at the same time, but this is somehow all the points I didn't think to mention.

Oh. I didn't know that, I just assumed it meant a group of three or more characters together.

Plus one.
Hrm. I remember thinking about this implication before, but can't remember why I decided not to suggest it.
Might just be because duo_focus -group still needed some cleanup. (Mostly multi-headed characters. Those are always causing tagging headaches.)

This one works, so approved.
