If the more populated one is the one without the period, then shouldn't the one with the period be aliased to the one without it? Besides, I do not think I have ever seen a tag with a period in it. It should be clear why since it's not up to code.

There are lots of popular tags with periods in them. There are also a fair few with double quotes, which are even more annoying to deal with.
