In the above artworks, the characters have feet with three ‘main’ toes and a dewclaw. For tagging purposes, does that count as 4_toes (including the dewclaw) or 3_toes (excluding the dewclaw)? I’m seeing several posts that count the dewclaw as a toe in the tags and others that don’t.

This should probably be clarified in the wiki

I think they're basically regular claws, just as a thumb or a big toe is a finger (opposable) or a toe. For example, though the dewclaws on my cats are placed differently from the regular fingers, they're still effectively my cats' "thumbs", and so count as one of the fingers.

…so technically speaking they do count as an additional finger / toe?

I'd say less an "extra" finger/toe than just a special normal one. When you say an extra finger or toe, I think more of polydactyly more than dewclaws.

Though what does this mean for tagging posts on e621? In the above mentioned atworks for example, should they be tagged as 3_toes or 4_toes? This could use some clarification in the wiki

Personally, I'd count the examples as 4_toes since the dewclaws count as toes regardless of where they're placed. The wiki isn't set in stone, so if it needs some clarification, there's nothing stopping someone from editing it (although gathering opinions first, as you are doing with this thread, is a very good idea).
