Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: diode -> diode_(disambiguation)

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Does it? Other than diode itself, there's also light-emitting_diode, which is little more than a type of diode that shines when electricity goes through it. There are no characters or artists that use "diode" as diode, but instead happen to use those letters in that order in the name — heiseiradiodenk, diodevildog, radiodelta.

Of the three diode-tagged pictures, one is clearly of a light-emitting_diode (now with that tag added in). The other two don't have anything I can identify as a diode, although their techy themes suggest diode was added because of that theme. Rather than disambiguating, we should instead alias diode to light-emitting_diode, because the only other "diode" that I think is likely to somehow, maybe, possibly get mistaken for plain, old diode is diodevildog, who technically has nothing to do with diodes of any sort except for that coincidental arrangement of letters, a potential mistake that I think would be unlikely.

On a nerd basis, I think light-emitting_diode should imply diode, rather than an alias going the other way. It's possible to have a diode that's not an LED, even if the current (ha!) score is 0 out of 3,484,000.

That was my first thought. As my dad used to be into electronics of all sorts, I'm aware that diodes come in many types and varieties, but LEDs are pretty much the only diode the average user is going to actually recognize. How would we distinguish the non-LED diodes from transistors, capacitors, resistors, and other assorted electronic components? Some might be assembled on a circuit board, but we should tag those with circuit_board.

(Also, you'll notice that I haven't exactly drawn up a BUR to alias diode away to LEDs. Obviously, there needs to be discussion and feedback first. But this thread is for whether diode needs to be disambiguated or not.)

To be fair, diode _packages_ is a deep hole of (non-)implications. TO-220 transistor package can just as well have a half-bridge which you guessed it is 2 diodes. Or you can have two diodes with a common anode or cathode, and able to run them in parallel, again in a 3-pinconductor package.

The only iconic non-LED diodes I remember being pretty obvious if drawn, are the black ones with silver ring painted on them, the red 'switching diodes' Radio-Shack used to sell millions of, and the transparent ones with the little germanium crystal in the middle. There's the vacuum tube things, but no one remembers those AS diodes? XD Note: Hobbyist bias on what's familiar

Examples:
1N4004
1N4118
Germaniums
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vacuum_tubes Not even going to pull up examples of all those, as they're even less useful for tagging discussion than the 3 above links.

LED should probably be used for light-emitting diodes but some fool will think it means lead or to follow or??? heh
