Topic: The Distinction Between Furries and Scalies is Completely Meaningless

Posted under General

I don't mean in the physical attribute sense, obviously scales =/= fur.
I mean more in the sense of people who are like "no no no, I'm not a furry. I'm a scaly!"
Like, for all intensive purposes, what information are you providing to me by saying that? Do you exclusively survey art of scaly characters and make a point of not following furry stuff?

TLDR, scalies and furries are the same category of people

I guess some people just don’t want to be fully associated with the furry fandom and only enjoy the scaly aspects of it.

... I mean, it's a preference. Some folks only enjoy certain types of characters. One might as well argue, given how drastically different in configuration and design reptile characters tend to be to mammal ones, the same with regards to folks who follow human artwork. Why don't you follow Bara, Trap, Futa, Monstergirl-- yadda yadda, they're all basically the same thing, they're all humans.

Different folks do want to associate with certain subcultures, or sub-subcultures, but not others. For what it's worth, I'm a teratophile, not a furry, I get lumped in anyway because "lolnonhuman".

In japan, they call it "Kemo" from 獣 (けもの) meaning "Beast". Which is alot more inclusive. But another term i sometimes see is "Jin Gai" 人外 (じんがい) meaning "NonHuman", an even more inclusive term.

It's a bit of a language thing isn't it? All cuz furry is the main and popular term, it became the de facto one.

They don’t get “furry” is just a name and it actually means “non-human enjoyer”.

Can’t really blame em, shit’s a bit confusing

They want to say that they prefer lizards than "furred characters", but yeah the term is vague because it can be used as an "umbrella" for "non human" characters but also furred individuals...but its not just hentai that has dumb genres/names that stick, see "Metroidvania" in games that muddles the genre if you just want a more 2D exploration game without rpg elements like Metroid, it will be mixed with other games that are more like SOTN.

Like Benjiboyo said Japan has a bit better, they have "kemo" and "jingai" as terms and for metroidvania they call it "search action", still they don't always get it right...belt action game?

I'm not sure that's the problem. Furries have a bit of a reputation and so folks who are fan of funny animals will try to distance themselves from the term. Scalies are obvious ones, but there are sonic fans, mlp fans.

On an aside, I don't think metroidvania really gets bastardized, at least, not as much as roguelike. Everything is a roguelike nowadays, this term is meaningless.

And I am being fair, now try to discuss the metroidvania genre naming with a metroid fanboy...good luck lol.

Yeah it's funny because there are very few games that are similar to the original Rogue...and there is also the roguelite genre, "fun"...
