Topic: [Feature] Link to wiki pages from tag autocomplete

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Requested feature overview description.

There should be clickable wiki links next to tag autocomplete suggestions.

It could be a question mark to the left of the tag, like the ones on e621.net/posts* pages.

They could be given a wider font, some left/right padding, or non-breaking spaces to make them easier to click.

The links should always open in a new tab.

There could be a different character than the question mark to indicate which wiki pages don't exist. A monospaced font should be used to keep the two characters the same width.

Why would it be useful?

It would allow you to more quickly check the definitions for tags, especially when using the upload page.

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?

Anywhere with a post search box
Tag edit mode on post search
Edit tab on posts
Everywhere with tag autocomplete on upload page

Privileged

I know I asked for this several years ago when e621's autocomplete was much newer. I've seen others ask for it since then, and we're here again.

What tends to happen when tagging is:

  • have a tag in mind but not sure how I should use it
  • add questionable tag to Tags input box when editing tags to bring up autocomplete
  • middle mouse click tag from autocomplete to open a search for that tag in a new tab (complete waste of site resources)
  • click the desired tag's ? to open its wiki
  • read wiki and mull over my tagging issue
  • optional: forget to remove the tag from the Tags edit box, resume 50+ tag edit, and accidentally Submit a tag change with a mistag

I usually catch those mistags on after-edit review, but not always. This "workflow" is faster or somehow more tactile than going to a Tags tab (this) and searching the tag there.

At minimum, I'd want a quick wiki link for autocomplete in the tag edit box on post and upload pages. Maybe the main search input doesn't need it, but quick wiki links would be very useful for editing tags.

+1
Having to go out of my way to check if the tag is applicable just disincentivises doing so.

I've been doing exactly that.

This may mean that the "suggested tag" box can't be a simple drop-box full of text tags anymore. Maybe the box turns into a child of the tag input box, with something like

autocomplete_tag_1 wiki existing_posts autocomplete_tag_2 wiki existing_posts autocomplete_tag_3 wiki existing_posts

.
where wiki and existing posts are links.

I think it should mirror what we see on post pages for consistency, but with the suggestions I made to make it easier to click:

?  tag_name -> alias_name                      12k
*  tag_name2                                   107
    tag_name2 107

1st one has clickable wiki link, including the padded area around the question mark, and clicking everything to the right of that adds the tag like normal.
2nd one has no wiki page yet. Maybe allow the user to click it to make a new wiki page, OR don't open anything.
3rd one has a blank area instead of * for no wiki page, alignment with other rows preserved.

The amount of horizontal space taken up by a single character and some padding is not too much.

Updated

I'm just going to bump this again to say that since switching to doing most of my stuff on mobile, this feature would be at least like 10x more useful for mobile users than desktop users. with mobile to even get to the tag list you have to scroll down past all the way down past the posts to even get to the tag list, then press the tiny ? button on the far left hand side of the screen and probably fat-finger one of the other half-dozen click-regions several times while making the attempt, and then finally you're on the tag's wiki page. that's assuming you're even in a state where that'd be possible, if you're currently editing tags you have to start typing in a tag, long press, open in new tab, wait for the page to load, scroll all the way down, then hope you can hit the ? within a few tries.
if I could just type a tag into the box, and then long press to open the tag wiki page in a new tab it'd be infinity more convenient. and then from there if you wanted to go to the posts page you can just click on the giant tag name text from there (or the Posts button in the hamburger menu or the view all button under the wiki entry).

topic #35416 proposes an even more straightforward (and more mobile-friendly) solution to this issue, which I would prefer.

EDIT: Oh wait I just noticed OP of that topic is sipothac's alt.

EDIT2: And this isn't even the first link to that topic in this thread. Can we just get this feature implemented already?
