I'm trying to get the -ambiguous_gender tag added to my blacklist without interfering with the -female. I want to allow both, but the methods I've tried don't seem to work the way I want them to. Any help or suggestions?

Use different lines? I'm not quite sure what you're going for, here. Males only?
If you only want to see posts that contain either ambiguous or female characters than put -female and -ambigous_gender on the same line on in the blacklist. That should only hide posts that lack both tags, I'm assuming that's what you're looking for.
As an example, blacklisting Pokemon -ambiguous_gender -female on one line would block Pokemon posts, unless there's at least one female or ambiguous gender character present.
-ambiguous_gender -femaleon one line would block all posts that lack any female/ambiguous characters (i.e. block male-only posts, a male and an intersex character, etc.)
