Topic: The neoteny tag

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

There's a neoteny tag which seems to be mostly people trying to avoid tagging young, the wiki page says "Neoteny (a.k.a. juvenilization) is the retention of juvenile characteristics into adulthood, usually due to delayed physical development. In other words, this refers to adult characters having young ("neotenic") characteristics, such as a proportionally large head, flat face, and short limbs."

This essentially means young adult_(lore) and I feel like it should be aliased to young? But a few things with the tag currently are just chibi characters that don't look particularly young to me. If it were cleaned out, do you guys think this could be safely aliased to young?

A character could have some juvenile characteristics, and not look young overall. That's basically what chibi is, if I understand correctly, and a tag for that would be useful. It does seem to mostly be used to avoid young, though.
I think changing its category to invalid might be better, to avoid having to first remove it from posts where it does apply but not young.

I could see neoteny being a problem with TWYS. If it's for a character that has young features and is at best ambiguously aged, but is actually an adult, that would imply the use of adult_(lore). But logically, only another lore tag can imply a lore tag as it relies on external knowledge/artist intent, and in that case, the tag is functionally identical to adult_(lore) (a character that is an adult, but doesn't look like one).

It should be aliased to dwarfism because it means practically the same thing.

The bulk update request #5080 is active.

change category neoteny (0) -> invalid

Reason: Yeah invalidating seems like the way to go, good idea

I chose invalidation instead of disambiguation because I think I heard disambiguation is more meant for similar sounding words, rather than ambiguous concepts like this. However there are several different things neoteny could mean:
- young + adult_(lore)
- chibi
- dwarfism
- an adult anthro tadpole or something
So please let me know if this should be disambiguated instead

While in theory it has a use case for an adult anthro based on a tadpole, larva, axolotl, or glowworm, I've only been able to find one post, post #55558, that actually matches this use case and not as a synonym for chibi or a way to dodge the young tag, so it's probably not worth keeping neoteny around since if it's anything but invalid it will most often be misapplied.
