Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: super_mario_bros._2 -> super_mario_usa

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #63341 super_mario_bros._2 -> super_mario_usa has been rejected.

Reason: Alias reason: Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) was also known as Super Mario USA in Japan after re-releasing original formula/reference from Doki Doki Panic, as I said my comment

"super_mario_usa" is also ambiguous to the uninitiated, there are many Super Mario games in the USA. super_mario_bros._2_(usa) would be clearer at least. Though we're also brought back around to when game series should get specific tags instead of being aliased to the series. Mario in particular seems to be an inconsistent mess, with some of the more distinct games being aliased away, and some of the lesser distinct games staying separate.

I see... Maybe could be some confusions

I think that since Lost Levels lacks enough visual identity seperate it from SMB1 to warrant it having its own tag I don't think we really need to change the tag name for super_mario_bros._2.

Lost Levels is literally SMB's engine. You can move levels between them easily. So the Japanese sequel to SMB is basically the same game with more trollsome physics and trickier levels. Since tags are meant for visual search, it doesn't make sense to separate them. See also: https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/arcade-archives-vs-super-mario-bros-switch/ The arcade version of this is ... different than the NES version of SMB. Still the same graphics.

Also, I've never heard it (The Doki Doki Panic mod?) called "Super Mario USA". Hmm, looked it up: https://www.mariowiki.com/BS_Super_Mario_USA

that's kind of what I was saying. although, I'm pretty sure that you can't actually just drag and drop levels into SMB1 from 2J, if you could they certainly wouldn't all be beatable since smb1 doesn't have wind or green springboards, and bounce mechanics were changed/improved in 2J. and also poison mushrooms didn't exist.

"Super Mario USA" is just the Japanese name for the US version of SMB2. so like, Japan got Doki Doki Panic for the FDS, Doki Doki Panic got updated, reskined, and ported back to the standard NES as Super Mario Bros. 2, SMB2 was brought back over to Japan to release as Super Mario USA.
BS Super Mario USA is a version of Super Mario USA for the Satellaview Super Famicom add-on. it was a game that you could only play in a windows of time alongside live radio broadcasts with actors portraying the characters.

https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/178/ I was looking up the differences in format when I saw this. ShaneM was patching some old SMB/Pokemon games and I vaguely remember him mentioning the similarities in the level formats. They're basically just compression-by-tiles methods to position objects at a starting position, that then get shown on screen using a RAM buffer. Yeah, some differences exist even if you technically can do it.

Funny enough, people hacked a lot of the BS games but... no audio kind of reduces the experience.
