This is from 2021, has anything happened in this timespan?

Seems like old news, yeah. This has been used for 20+ years, both legitimately and not. Like, I'm sure we're all familiar with The Pirate Bay and controversial sites like ED that had to keep changing TLDs every week or three. The real fuckery will be if a browser refuses to use 3rd-party DNS, or requires signed entries for them, effectively allowing revocation of domains without any obvious workarounds ala Hosts file or your own DNS server. Given how damn slow DNS can be already when doing lots of requests, I can imagine that not being a popular decision to make it even less reliable, though. ;)
