Topic: Ponies aren't horses… are they?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Why is horse a parent tag of pony? It shouldn't be implicated as ponies aren't horses.

*reads wikipedia* what...? Now I'm confused. I thought they were separate breeds. Seems like this is kind of contested lol.

Horses are horses, there are exactly two species of horse that still exist, and good fuckin' luck finding the wild one. Any horse you see, regardless of how big or small it is, or what colour it is, is a horse. Breeds/landraces can be thought of similarly to, in us humans, hair colour, skin colour, height, so on. You're still a human, even if you're a redhaired, blue-eyed hobbit, regardless of how punt-able you may look.

fwiw i always thought "pony" was just what baby horses were called, like puppy or kitten, until reading this

we all have gaps in our knowledge, after all

That would be foal (any horse under one year), colt (male four and under), or filly (female four and under). Yearlings are any horse between the ages of one and two, as expected.

Ponies are just hotblooded (feisty), compact horse varieties, as opposed to draughts/drafts which are coldblooded (calm) and very large, or your standard warmbloods which fall in-between in temperment and size.

Ponies are indeed horses. But while ponies tend to be smaller than other horses, it's not technically based on size, but on proportions—ponies have a stocky build, with relatively shorter legs. There are breeds of horse that are called "horses" that are smaller than breeds called "ponies".
