Hey all, I've been thinking about this for a long time and I figured I might as well just shoot my question...

Why are sleep sex and sleep molestation two different tags? I think the sleep molestation tag should be erased and just lumped into the sleep sex tag. But if you really need to make a distinction, maybe we could call it something else?

The word "molestation" is really fucking me up, considering that i think the sleep sex tag used to be lumped in with rape or something IIRC up until last year or so. Sleep rape maybe? I can't remember exactly, I just know that it was brutal.

If not, that's cool I guess, I just want an explanation.

Because they're two different things, just as sex and molestation are two different things. Molestation is unwanted sex or sexual advance, but not all sleep sex is sleep molestation, and not all sleep molestation is sleep sex.

I do wonder if sleep_molestation is needed as a tag, though. It seems sleep+molestation would work about as well. It also seems like it's suffering similarly to a recently brought up issue of some people assuming sleep_sex is automatically unwanted or questionable_consent, where people are tagging molestation just because one character is asleep. E.g. post #2267043 is tagged molestation despite the in-picture indication that it's not unwanted.

A distinction like that just seems like TWYK to me. In most cases it's impossible to tell whether a sleeping character consented or not without external knowledge.

Which is why we assume consent unless there's visible reason to think otherwise. If a character being bound and/or having a pained expression isn't enough to question consent, a character sleeping shouldn't be enough either, IMO.
