Topic: Suggestion: Rename sound_warning to loud_sound_warning

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

The purpose of the sound_warning tag, as per its wiki entry, is to warn the viewer that there will be an obscenely loud sound at some point in the submission. IE, for jumpscares, characters shouting, sudden overly loud music, and such.

Nobody actually uses this tag for that purpose. Almost every time I see this tag on a post (I'd say upwards of 90% of the time), it does not belong, because there is no obscenely loud sound at any point. As an example, let's look at the ten most recent posts to include the tag at the time of this forum post...

post #4456065 - Moaning, groaning and growth sound effects. Nothing obscenely loud.
post #4456053 - Very gentle music and a demure female voice moaning. She doesn't even get very loud.
post #4455764 - Somewhat loud gurgling sounds, so this one could be considered borderline. Even so, I wouldn't at all classify the sounds as obscenely loud.
post #4455498 - Very quiet slapping sounds and quiet moaning. This is the worst offender, it's not even loud at all.
post #4455283 - Energetic music, but not cranked up to any ridiculously loud volume levels. This would only be obscenely loud if the user's own speakers were cranked up.
post #4454603 - Porno dialogue and sex sounds.
post #4454492 - Panting, moaning and quiet music.
post #4454472 - There's barely any sound in this to begin with, just a bit of gagging and slapping.
post #4454434 - Besides more quiet moaning, there's music in the background that's deliberately muffled so as to not be very loud.

So, you see my point? Uploaders see "Sound Warning" and think its purpose is to warn the viewer that there is ANY sound at all in the video. We already have a tag for that, and it's called sound. Since sound_warning's purpose is to warn about LOUD sounds, it just makes more sense to rename it so it accurately reflects this. As it stands, it's just incorrectly applied to probably thousands of uploads at this point...

I think this should be adjusted. The sound doesn't have to be obscenely loud, but rather unexpectedly loud. Basically to avoid the issue of someone playing a video that seems quiet or silent, only to find sex noises start happening that other people around may be able to hear. Or for a video to start very quiet causing them to turn up the volume, followed by normal sounds that would now be very loud with the volume turned up.

Agreed, the tag has a clear use that's currently being ignored a lot of the time

I've been through this same issue before when I noticed nearly all my uploads had been mistagged with it, its really apparent that people just use it as a synonym for the sound tag

I was under the impression that sound_warning wasn't just for anti-errape purposes but also so that speaker-users know to turn their volume down so that they don't have the loud sex moan at 0:00 of a video echo through their house at 3AM.

+1

sound and sound_warning should have a clear difference but are currently being used for the same purpose in many cases.
Changing the name to loud_sound_warning would definitely make it more obvious whether to tag just sound or both sound and loud_sound_warning.

I also thought that was the case. Apparently we have sound as a tag too though.

Ideally sound_warning would be an actual warning and not a tag. Since it has been marked as an artist tag purely for visibility reasons, I don't think it's a big deal if it is basically synonymous with the sound tag. That just means users want to be warned about all sound.

Count me in as someone who is surprised that sound exists. I always thought sound_warning meant "hey, this has sound" for the reasons given above. Adding loud_sound_warning seems fine, if you can get people to use it consistently.

there's a bit of a difference between a post just having sound and the first sound you can hear from an animation being sex noises, it was/is especially a problem with SWF posts that have no play button and just start going at full volume as soon as the tab is active. most of the time there's some quieter/less lewd sounds at the start to give the to give the user a chance to lower their volume, though.

also, am I misremembering or didn't artist tags used to show up in the page title? I could have sworn that was why sound_warning was an artist tag in the first place, so that your tab would say sound_warning before you even clicked into it. I know for certain that other boorus do that, but I don't have any pages bookmarked from back then and no one that I know to use the site does either.
