Huh, well that's a term I haven't heard before. TIL

Alias denied because this won't actually work. The word "fringe" has two very different definitions:

1, the most common definition for the word "fringe", especially worldwide, is for the dangling edging found on some clothing and other textiles. Most people are familiar with it as the dangly strips on cowgirl/cowboy western clothing, or the decorative edging on the ends of some scarves, the hems of some dresses and skirts, the edges of some curtains, etc. It's called a 'fringe', and has been in common use for several hundred years for this decorative edging.

2, is the reason for this alias suggestion. It's a hairstyle with a fringe of shorter hair over the forehead and/or eyes.

However, using the word "fringe" for this hairstyle is not actually widely used worldwide. It's a regionalism, almost chiefly British use of the word and relatively recent in origin. And while it's spread a little bit because of tv and the internet, it still isn't the most common use of the word. And we already have bangs (which is more American for the same thing), hair_over_eye, hair_over_eyes and even the obscure hair_fringe tags for this type of thing. Whether we even need all of them is debatable, but we certainly don't need this less common definition of the word fringe for it as well.

Looking through what's both currently and in the past been under the tag fringe, it looks like the majority of use has been for the textile edging definition, so it shouldn't be a problem to keep it that way. And that use of "fringe" for the hairstyle is just a handful of users. So in all, it looks like we'd be much better off getting some good wikis up for these tags, and keep the hairstyle under any of the already existing hair-related tags instead.

I'm totally fine with that, in fact I'd forgotten I had even made this suggestion. Good on you for doing this much research! Perhaps I was a bit too hasty in my own conclusions.
